on ABSTRACT
Apparatus and associated systems and methods may relate.
‘process for supplying unidirectional cureat toa load, eon-
twoling reverse electromotive force (REME), capturing
induetive eneray from dhe load, and supplying the captured
induetive energy 10 the load. In an illsteative example, an
‘operating eyele may include a sequence of operations. Firs,
inductive energy captured from the load on a previous cyele
may be supplied tothe lod, Second, energy may be supplied
to the load fiom an extemal power sour. Third, « REME
vollage may be substantially coniolled upon disconnecting
the power souree from the load. Fourth the Ioad current may
bbe brought to zero by capturing the inductive energy for use
‘ona subsequent eye. Insome embodiments, a single poser
stage may supply a DC inductive load, ora pair of power
Stages may be operated to supply bidirectional current to an
AC load.

‘TECHNICAL FIELD
‘Various embodiments relate to operating inductive andor
resistive loads
BACKGROUND
Many electrically-operated systems and devices have
Indvetanee, Some inductive devices, such as DC (directeur
rent) motors, aulomotive ignition systems, and some electro-
magnets, can operate when supplied with a unidirectional
‘current. Some inductive deviees, such as transformers, AC
(oltemating current) motors, and fluorescent lights, operate
‘when supplied with s bidirectional current
In general, inductive elements can store energy in 3 mag~
netic field. Typically, the magnetic field is supported by an
‘elecric curent flowing through th inductive element. Induc~
tance may be a function ofthe characteristics of magnetic
flux path. For example, inductance in some elements may
‘depesd on material properties of a core (eg. at, stee, and
path, and/ora flo density saturation evel
‘of energy stored ia a magnetic field of an
induetive element can be funtion of the induetanee and the
‘general, the amount of energy stored in the mag-
netic fed inereases as current inereases, and docreases as the
‘current decreases. Accordingly, when the current through the
induetive element is zer, the stored inductive energy is also
‘One characteristic of an ideal inductor is that a voltage
‘ross th inductor is proportional to its inductance and the
time mie of change of curent. This concept may be repre=
sented by a formula as: VL di
‘Under certain eonltions, the energy stored in an inductor
‘ean generate potentially uncontrolled large voltages. This
‘effect may be referred to by tems such as reverse electromo-
tiveforee(REMF),lyhack voltage, or “inductive kick" Asan
ithstative example, ifan inductor is being supplied a current
through a switch, and that switch is rapidly opened, then the
inductor may have relatively large change of current (Lange
