Qingdao Letterpress Field Trip

What an amazing field trip! The students loved learning about the way that the Ancient
Chinese used woodblocks for printing. They not only had a chance to look at the
Ancient Chinese woodblock printing but they also had a chance to look at and use
printing machines that were invented throughout history. The students learned about
the many dierent Chinese characters that are used throughout China and how to line
these characters up in the woodblocks in order to make many copies of one print. Since
the field trip the students have been working on making paper in class and also creating
prints with Ms. Nadine in Art class. As always, I am amazed with their hard work and
vitality when learning new things."

The Science of Paper Making

Over the past two weeks we have been learning about the Scientific Method and about the process of
paper making. We studied the process of making paper because it is connected to our study of Ancient
Chinese Inventions. The students made a hypothesis about whether glue, uncooked rice, or cooked rice
would create the smoothest recycled paper and be the easiest to write on. We tested each variable by
adding it to recycled paper and plant materials. After we followed the procedures for making recycled
paper we used our observations and came to the conclusion that uncooked rice was the best material to
use for our paper. The students had an amazing time creating paper with their classmates and are
looking forward to showing you their results at the Key Assignment.
