Content Area: Science
Standards Addressed:
S5CS7. Students will be familiar with the character of scientific knowledge and how it is achieved.
Students will recognize that:
a. Similar scientific investigations seldom produce exactly the same results, which may
differ due to unexpected differences in whatever is being investigated, unrecognized
differences in the methods or circumstances of the investigation, or observational uncertainties.
b. Some scientific knowledge is very old and yet is still applicable today

Describe how you would Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in your
classroom: We would study the migration of hummingbirds using Journey North. This online
source will allow us to see the migration of the birds, study about them, and work on activities
given by the website, and even communicate with experts via Skype about hummingbirds and
their migration.
What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a
classroom? Access to internet where students are able to use Journey North. A Skype account in
order to communicate with experts about hummingbirds. Access to a smart board in order to
ease all these activities for the students, where they can see and experience the cyber
communication through the smart board.
Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them
may not be addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level.):
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often
beyond their school: Journey North allows us to get in contact with experts and
other classrooms around the world in order to discuss and share ideas and
conclusions about our findings.
b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (collecting original data and or
producing original products as a result of engaging in the project): Using Journey
North, students will be able to track the migration of hummingbirds as well as
receive updates about it.
c. Higher-order thinking: Track hummingbirds migration, describe it, locate it and
explain it.
d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their
product: We will create a classroom project night where parents and family
members are welcomed to come in and listen to our findings and experiences.

technology is the center of our project. We will be creating a final product using findings, date,
experiments and knowledge from experts and outside the classroom peers. We will be taking the
project outside the classroom by communicating through Journey North with other classrooms
that are doing the same thing as we are.
How could you implement this proposed learning experience and still comply with your districts
Internet Safety and Student Privacy policies? Working together as a class, monitoring their
access, sending permission forms to parents about posting their childs work and picture up
online.
