Experiment #2

Materials: 1 Mason jar filled with water, cup of hot water, red dye, ice cube, gloves, spoon,
and dropper
Question: What do you think will happen when you pour hot water (red) and cold water
(blue ice cube) together in the Mason jar?
Hypothesis: (If.thenbecause)

4.

Fill the Mason Jar with water.

Put five drops of red dye into the cup of hot water and stir with the dropper.
Use the dropper squeeze (red) hot water into the Mason jar. Observe what happens
with the hot water. Notice the direction it is moving.
Wearing gloves drop the (blue) ice cube into the Mason jar. Observe what happens.

Experiment #3
Materials: 2 thermometers, black can, white can, and incandescent light bulb
Question: Which can (black or white) will have a higher temperature? Why?

Things to think about:

What happened to the cold blue water and
the red hot water in the jar?

2.
3.
4.

Place a thermometer in each of the two cans. Record the initial

temperature at 0 min.
Place the two cans side by side, 5 inches away from the
incandescent light bulb.
Face the incandescent light bulb toward the two cans. Turn
the light on.
Record the temperature of each can at one minute intervals for
5 minutes. Record the results in the data table.

What type of heat transfer is this activity
showing us?

Things to think about:

Which can (black or white) absorbed more heat energy? Why do you think
that happened?

Where else might you see this heat transfer

in real life?

Period:

HEAT TRANSFER
In our environment, heat transfer always moves from the ______________
object to the ____________ object. Heat transfers to and through some
materials better than others. Heat moves in three different ways.

Experiment #1
Materials: Bowl of hot water, metal spoon, wooden spoon, plastic spoon
Question: What do you think will happen to the temperature of the
different spoons after you sink them in hot water?
Hypothesis: (If.thenbecause)

____________ is the transfer of energy through empty space along

electromagnetic waves. The source of the heat and the body that is
heated are not touching. An example of this is when the Suns heat
transfers to Earth from millions of miles away.
Procedures:
1.
2.

Put all four spoons into the hot water at once. Try to arrange them so that they arent
touching each other.
After a minute or two, feel the difference in temperature in each spoon.

Things to think about:

Objects that allow heat to flow through them easily are called conductors. What
spoon(s) felt warmer/ hotter when you touched them?

___________ is the transfer of heat between objects or substances that are

in direct contact with each other. Heat can make atoms vibrate or set
electrons in motion. The heat is transferred when the vibration or motion
communicates to neighboring atoms. ____________ works well in solids
because the atoms are close together.

_____________ is the transfer of heat by movement through gases or

liquids. As a gas or liquid is heated, it warms, expands, and rises because it
is becomes less dense. When the gas or liquid cools it becomes denser and
begins to sink. As a gas or liquid warms and rises or cools and sinks it
creates a __________ current.

Objects that do not allow heat to flow through them easily are called insulators. What
spoon(s) didnt feel as hot after soaking them in hot water?
