Lesson for Oct. 23 and 28, 2014


Outcomes:
Experiment with language and forms
Experiment with a variety of forms of oral, print and other media texts to
discover those best suited for exploring, organizing and sharing ideas,
information and experiences.
Materials:
Newsworthy? PowerPoint.
Picture of Inverted Pyramid
Newspaper story
Fake press release.
Anticipatory Set (5 minutes)
When students are settled, ask them this question:
Say I was on my way to school this morning when I was passed by
an armoured car that had been stolen by thieves. I was able to
force them to stop the armoured car and beat up all the robbers
before the police arrived. Is this news?

Then ask, Say I woke up this morning and when to get the milk out
of the fridge for my cereal. I discovered the milk was expired. So I
ate toast instead. Is this news?
Ask students why they think one item is news and the other is not? Write
answers on board.

News is always about two things people and money.
Advance to next slide. Next slides will have examples of situations that occur
and will ask students if it is news. Ask for show of hands of whether or not it
is news before revealing answer.
Check for understanding.
Advance to next slide. Say we are going to talk about how to actually write a
news story.
Explain that news stories are different from every other story they
have ever been taught.
Ask what three things they have been taught that stories must
contain.
o Beginning, middle and end.
Explain news stories are different.
What goes first is what is most important.
Then what comes next is whats the next least important, and so on.

Tell students we are going to be focusing on the lede.
The lede is the first, most important part of any news story.
It is where we answer our five Ws.
It is one sentence and that sentence is no more than 30 words long.
Ask students to take out their news story from the beginning of the unit.
Hand out a news story to students. Ask them to circle the 5Ws. Ask for some
to share.
Check for understanding
Hand out fake press release and read through with students.
Explain to students they have 10 minutes to write a lede from the press
release.
Closure (5 minutes)
Ask some students to share their ledes.
Collect for formative assessment.
