Self Assessment: I feel that I answered most of the questions from the assignment sheet
effectively. There were two questions that I was somewhat foggy on, and that will be clear to
anyone that reads this essay. Overall, apart from the questions I was unclear on I am satisfied
with my work on this assignment.
After having my essay peer edited, I feel much better about the contents of my paper. I am still
foggy on two questions, but I feel that the peer workshop helped my understanding and I believe
I did the best that I could with the knowledge that I have. I am glad to have had my paper peer
edited, it was very beneficial to my paper as a whole.

Framework for Success: Individual Analysis- Creativity

Throughout this framework for success project, my whole team collaborated on each
separate part fluidly to explore our assigned habit of mind, creativity. My team and I collectively
used our rhetorical knowledge to choose our three genres to present to our audience. The
presentation of our habit of mind was to be crafted for an eighth and ninth grade audience, so
we chose our genres accordingly. A great way to target this audience is to relate to them
through current trends, so my team chose to make one of our genres a source of social media:
Twitter. Another genre we decided on was to a prezi presentation to convey our information.
Prezi has given the powerpoint presentation method a very welcome, modern, upgrade in the
past few years to which many young students can focus on more readily. Our final genre was
the creation of a T-shirt conveying the ideas of creativity through imagery. All three of these
genres we chose using our rhetorical knowledge of our young audience in order to
communicate our ideas to them more effectively. Considering our habit of mind was creativity,

we tried to put a creative flare on every one of our genres in order to give our audience
underlying examples.
The writing process within our group was very individual in itself. The group gave each
member complete access to each of the genres in order to add their own content at any point.
For example, every member of my team had complete access to the Twitter account. Over the
time period that we have been working on this framework for success assignment, each
member of the team has been randomly accessing the account to contribute to the genre. The
Prezi was also very similar in the fact that every member had access to add their own
contributions to the genre. It was a very trustworthy system but we all ended up reviewing each
genre before final submission. Essentially, the writing in this project was very collaborative
through individual contributions.
My group didnt really compose our writing in multiple environments, all of our genres
were better suited for computer composition. Twitter and Prezi both required computer
composition, and the T-shirt was most flexible when using computer generated applications.
Although all three used computer technology for writing, all three genres required a different
environment as far as formats. Twitter posts have to be within 140 characters and right to the
point. Prezi writing can be longer than twitter posts but are placed strategically on a creative
plane to attract a readers eye. The T-shirt was created through an online application; the
amount of characters used in this genre was also limited due to shirt size. The writing was
spread through different environments in the sense that different online formats are very
diverse.
Through this project, I have learned the use of conventions in writing by using different
genres. Conventions in writing could be considered writing etiquette that dictates when to or
when not to include certain writing techniques in your writing. I believe that the writing I did
personally within this project helped cultivate my critical thinking. This is mainly because I

analyzed the audience that we were preparing this presentation for and used that
analysis to decide what genres to use in order to get our message across to them in the
most efficient manner.

John, I think you did great on this assignment! You answered the questions well and were
thorough in explanation. They were sometimes just missing a specific example to seal the deal
on your point. I would also go back and look at your opening and closing sentences in each
paragraph and make sure they sum up the paragraphs ideas and topics to ensure a clean and
smooth transition to the next paragraph. Also, consider adding opening and closing paragraphs
at the beginning and end. This will introduce your audience to the topics of your paper before
just diving in and then close all our ideas in a nice conclusion. Your ideas are clear and logical
and accurately represent the work we did as a group. Youre doing great, girly! -Erin

I attempted my best at answering all the questions. W while answering the questions, I was
unsure what the second question meant, so I am not entirely certain that I answered it correctly.
I am unsure if my paragraphs flow together as well as they should. I feel that having specific
questions to answer like this assignment made it harder for me to find a consistent way to write.
I feel like my paragraphs on convention may be the strongest while the paragraph on
composition environments may be the weakest.
Individual Response
Genres are an interesting concept in that they exist all over the place without people
really realizing it. There are genres for every circumstance and situation and they play a major
part in all (Formats of) writing. This habits of mind project was a great way for all of us to really
work with the different genres of the world. We worked as a class to come up with the concept
of our project then split into teams in order to give a wide variety of genres for high school
students to view while they learn about the habits of mind. My team worked to practice rhetorical
knowledge and critical thinking, while splitting up the work and contemplating conventions
(surrounding creativity?).
With my group having the topic of creativity, we had more pressure to come up with
ideas that expressed creativity along with all the needed information. With keeping in mind that
our audience would be 8th/(and) 9th graders, we came up with genre ideas that would hold the
attention of a young mind. At first, we contemplated the use of a short story, rap video, and
lecture, but each had a flaw that prevented us from being able to do them. The short story may
not have held onto the readers attention, the rap video would take more time than (we were?)
what was allowed, and the lecture was not very original. In the end, we settled on a Prezi

presentation, a T-shirt design, and a twitter feed. Prezis can display information and examples
in an easy and fun way, while t-shirts are simple and to the point, and in this day and age,
teenagers are absorbed into their social media. Each of these three genres appeared to be the
best fit for our audience and our habit of mind.
In our efforts to come up with the best tips and information to add to each of our genres,
we had to research more about how to write creatively and focus on that specific section of the
Framework document. We attempted to take the information we found and turn it into an
easier wording that would make the information more readable for our young audience. We
also looked up different pictures to add to our text because sometimes pictures can help better
express a point than actual words can.
As a group, we split the work in a way that we all had our own input for each genre, but mainly
worked on one individually. By working digitally, we could each check and see how the other
genres were doing and also add information to make that genre piece stronger. My genre was
the Prezi presentation. With the prezi, I used my past experience of both creating and view
prezis to guide me as I created it. As I was working on it, I kept changing the path of the
presentation as well as what order I wanted to display the information. I played around with what
information best fit where and in what order. It took a while before I could decide on what looked
best, but with trial and error I figured it all out.
Prezi is a unique website that allows for a more creative presentation than just a simple slide
show. It allows for more freedom in that the slides can be placed all around the prezi and even
inside other slides. Conventions for prezi would have to include its formatting. It would seem
odd if a prezi was organized like any other normal slideshow; the audience of a prezi
presentation will expect movement around the page layout as the slides change. It also has an
underlying rule of creativity, because without it, the presentation would not seem like it was an
actual prezi. (However,?) A major downside though is that it does not allow for different fonts,
only sizes and colors. This can make all the information look similar and blended. As far as how

writing style should be in a prezi, it should be based on all the details surrounding a presentation
such as its audience, main topic, and presentation setting. Prezi offers a vast amount of
possibilities when it comes to creation.
On the other hand, I learned about the conventions of twitter posts and t-shirts. I have never
been one for social media, so I did not know how limited a post actually was such as its
character space. Another thing is that the post normally have at least one hashtag at the end of
it. As for t-shirts, ideas need to be short and simple, otherwise the shirt would be overcrowded
and unappealing. A shirt also needs color to make it more interesting and desirable, otherwise it
will appear too plain. This goes to show that many forms of writing have their limits.
As we planned out our genres, we kept track of our ideas on a sheet of paper written by hand,
but each of our genres were created digitally. Writing in the prezi made me feel like we needed
to add more information than in our other two genres because of how it allowed for more space.
I preferred writing in the prezi because it was something that I was use to working with. Being
on twitter was new for me, but its extremely easy to figure out and go along with. With the tshirt, I have created t-shirt designs before, but not something with this much detail and
information. It was fun to try to think of a creative and attractive way to get necessary
information onto it. Working on the different types of genres and formats was an interesting way
to see how genres work in the world.
Ultimately, this project was a fascinating way to work with different genres and work on
designing a written work with consideration to where and who the works will be presented. It
helped me to think of things I have never thought of before while working on an assignment and
it was very insightful to how different factors can affect the outcome of a piece. Genres are an
essential part of all writing.

KT: girly this is a great paper! You provided examples and explained your ideas thoroughly!
The only thing is that I would go back and make sure that your topic sentences make it blatantly

obvious what each paragraph is about. It will make it easier for your reader to know what
question you are answering. Also, maybe think about adding a thesis sentence to your
conclusion paragraph just to ensure closure. This was very thoughtful and well organized!
Great job! -Erin
