Sam Dellinger

1. What do I need to know about you? I come from Cherryville North Carolina; I attended Cherryville High School
where I was involved in Football and Golf. I am an avid hunter but also like to help out and conserve. I am an
Eagle Scout. I also am restoring a 1971 Dodge Demon and love working on old cars.
2. What do you need from me more than anything else? I would like to get a view into the business world just a
little bit more than I already have. Right now I am a Criminal Justice major but I am open to trying to get a job
that will make me the happiest.
3. What does success in the classroom mean to you? Making good grades and more than that gaining more
knowledge of the subject. If I can walk out of a class knowing more than I did when I arrived I would be okay with
a bad grade, just as long as I gained knowledge.
4. What do you know about how people learn? I know that people learn in a different way. I do not learn well by
just listening to people, I like a more hands on approach. If I can get involved and get my hands on something to
show me how it works or how to apply a skill I do much better.
5. Whats the most creative thing youve ever done? While doing the planning for my Eagle Scout project I had to
come up with a project that helped make the community and world a better place. I wound up putting wood
duck boxes on a lake. By doing this I helped the wood duck population rise and brought awareness to the fact
that we are destroying their habitat.
6. How can technology be used for learning? Technology can be used to connect students to other resources
and videos outside of the typical text. Bringing tech into a learning environment also gets people more
interactive with the subject. By doing this people that learn more hands on like me understand the subject better.
7. What does it mean to understand something? To understand something is not only to learn it but be able to
recall the information and use it in a real life situation. Applying what you have learned is showing that you really
understand the material.
8. When was the last time youve solved a problem? The last time I solved a problem was when my Jeep died on
me going down the road at 55 miles per hour. I had to test many different aspects of the problem and find the
source. I really enjoy having problems like this and trying to figure out the solution.
9. How do you respond to expectations? I like some expectations but at the same time I like to set expectations
for myself and achieve those.
10. What is your proudest moment? During my senior year in high school my football team and I took home the
conference championship for the first time for Cherryville since 1934. Being the center for my team and snapping
the last play as my team took a knee to end the game I cannot describe the feeling I had from being proud of
my team and having a bigger sense of hometown pride.
11. What do you want to learn about? I want to learn about how business can be made better and how to make
a business more efficient. My father owns his own optometric practice and it would be helpful to know how to
make a business better for the people and profit.
12. Are you a picky reader? What are your strengths as a reader? I do enjoy to read but I have challenges that if
a subject bores me or I feel like the two page long description of one scene is a bit to long I will usually skip it. I
know this is a bad reading habit but to be honest I just get bored with some topics.

13. What is your personal philosophy? To take life one day at a time as it comes to you and try and be happy in
what you do. If you are going to do something for the rest of your life make sure you can be happy. Money cant
buy happiness.
14. When do you write best? I write best when it is on a subject I know well or a subject where there are facts and
not opinions. When there are facts to be presented in a paper I do very well when it is an opinion based theme I
do not exceed.
15. Whats worth understanding deeply? I think understanding how to get along with people but still getting things
done. Without doing this you really cannot accomplish anything. If you can understand on the psychological
level how to get along with people and still run things business-like you can accomplish anything and everything
else follows.
16. What are your best habits as a thinker? I sometimes can look at a problem and see an angle that most people
cannot see. I am a very visual person and I like to visualize things in the space in front of me. By being able to see
the problem and work it in front of me and visualize it I can get a different view than someone who has to have it
on paper.
17. Whats most important to you in life? The most important things to me are my family, my education, and my
future career.
18. What is the relationship between learning and #17? By learning and furthering ones education you can start
your own family and then the career comes from the education so that provides funding for that family to start up.
19. Where does your inner drive come from? My inner drive comes from the fact that no one thinks I can make it.
My family has not supported some of the decisions I have made and I hope to prove them wrong and show them
that I can have a fulfilling and good career in law enforcement and hopefully get a job in the wildlife office.
20. Who are your heroes or role models? I do not have any role models in particular, but I do look up to people
that have had a rough life but take that turn it around and make a thriving business for themselves.
21. Why study Criminal Justice? I chose to study Criminal Justice because I have always wanted people to
respect others and follow the rules. I am more interested in the law enforcement in the respect to wildlife because
if people poach, bait animals or hunt out of season, then there might not be enough resources for future
generations to enjoy and have the same experiences as our fathers and their fathers before them.
22. What are you good at that nobody knows? I am pretty decent at doing car bodywork. Over the past three
years I have taken a car from a rusted outer shell and now the car is laser straight and has one of the best paint
jobs around. This is a skill that took me the whole time I have been working on it to figure out and master, and I am
still not good enough in my own eyes.
23. What do teachers sometimes misunderstand about you as a learner? That I learn very visually and that I would
really love a hands-on approach.
24. What does it mean to study? To study for me is to sit down and really soak in the knowledge and figure out
when I am going to be able to apply this in my life and be able to help others with this info.
25. How do you respond to complex texts or digital media? I like some complex texts that really dive deep into a
subject and give you a perspective that you normally would not get as a student reading a normal textbook. I do
enjoy watching digital media when they can show you what they are talking about and help explain it through
visual aides.

26. If I get out of your way this year, what will you be able to do? I would be able to work with the other people
and help them achieve their goal by hopefully getting them organized and working together towards a mutual
goal.
