Reflection of SNG Event

Parts 1 and 2:
The first event I attended was called Triangle Garba, which was hosted by a student
organization called North Carolina State University (NCSU) Ektaa. This event took play on
October 4th, 2014 from 7pm-11pm in Talley Student Center State Ballroom. The two M100
classmates I went with were Vaibhavi Patel and Puja Patel. Triangle Garba is a Hindu cultural
dance that occurs during the time of Navaratri. During garba, men and women normally dress is
colorful cultural apparel for the dance.
This event helped me with my interactions with other cultures by opening me up to
people with different backgrounds. Even though I am a practicing Hindu and garba is a Hindu
event, I was exposed to people with different degrees of religiousness. With this experience, I
will be able to be more open-minded towards my peers. In all group settings, whether in a social,
academic or professional setting, you will encounter people with a different background than
yourself. By accepting this, and the fact that not everyone will have the same viewpoint as you,
you will be able to more efficiently and effectively work well with others. This relates to the
material in M100 and some of my other classes by applying the principle of working with people
with diverse backgrounds.
Another way this event can help me professionally is by helping me step out of my
comfort zone. Even though I am Hindu, I have rarely done garba. Personally, dancing in public
around unfamiliar people can be intimidating. However, by doing garba in a new setting around

unfamiliar people, I was able to step out of comfort zone. This will benefit me professionally
because sometimes you need to step out of your comfort zone and take a risk to be successful.
Staying in your comfort zone will give you safe results, but stepping out of that comfort zone can
dramatically increase success. By being able to break out of my comfort zone, I was able to try
something different that I really enjoyed and will now continue on doing.
The second event I attended was the ADA Americans with Disabilities Act. This event
took play on October 17, 2014 from 1:30pm-3:30pm at Admin II- Large Conference Room 101.
The two M100 classmates I went with were Vaibhavi Patel and Puja Patel. During this event,
students and faculty with disabilities and that were apart of the disabilities organization on
campus spoke about their struggles with disabilities throughout their lives and how it has
affected them. They continued on about how North Carolina State University has tried to
accommodate their needs to the best of its abilities and the programs that are in place and
implemented to help students with disabilities.
With all sincere honesty, I am very happy I went to this event. Of course having
disabilities can be difficult to live with, but hearing about the difficulties first hand is another
story. To hear and understand their difficulties is truly life changing. Additionally, to see how
North Carolina State University goes out of their way to make sure students with disabilities
have the same opportunities as students without disabilities is really a credit to the morality of
this school. Attending this event will benefit me because while working in a professional setting,

I may encounter an employee who has disabilities. Learning about these disabilities and the
difficulties associated with those disabilities will really help me relate more to that employee.

Part 3:
From the events I have attended, I have concurred that we all live in a diverse worse full
of people with different backgrounds and ideas. These different backgrounds and ideas
contribute to the society we have today, and which makes not only NC State, but also the entire
United States unique. I think the disability event had a profound affect on me; I never realized
the difficulties those people face on a daily basis, and how the university has helped them
accommodate to those struggles.
In all honesty, I dont believe I learned anything new about myself that I didnt already
know. However, I did rely on my SNG group on more than one occasion this semester. Multiple
people in my SNG group are in other classes of mine. We would work on assignments, help each
other out, and just be a friend to each other.
Diversity awareness is definitely valuable in business. This is because different people
bring in a wealth of knowledge and experience that could significantly contribute to the
company. An example would be a younger employee knowing more about social media than
older employees.

Diversity is all the aspects that contributes to the person you are. It hasnt changed
because your experiences make you a diverse and unique person. It is important because without
diversity, we would all have the same ideas, conclusions, and results.
