Classifying Angles (8-2)

Sarah Jamison
I.

Introduction:
A. Objective(s):
I can identify right angles, acute angles, obtuse angles, and straight angles.
I can correctly name a given angle.
I can identify complementary and supplementary angles.
B. Anticipatory Set:
Before we correct homework lets see if we remember what we learned about
yesterdayWho can give me a real life example of something that might represent the
vocab we covered yesterday? For example, we learned what a point was and we could
use the real life example of a polka dot to represent a pointwhat about a line? Ray?
Plane? Line segment? Talk with your table partners and see what you can come up
with

II.

C. Agenda:
Review and correct homework
Cover any questions
Start lesson
o Show learning objective: have students write in question form and I
can statement. Write I can statement on board
Cover slides: angle, right angle, acute angle, obtuse angle, straight angle
Pair share: define what we just covered in your own terms-state aloud
Examples with vocab
Cover slides: naming angles. Cover example with class participating/providing
angle
Cover slides: complementary and supplementary angles. Cover examples
Pair share: explain in own words what complementary and supplementary
angles are.
Homework
o Cover questions, have students give examples of reflections (summarize
together)
Activities, Strategies:
1) In group activity with students to open class with real life examples of vocab from
day before
2) Cover homework from night before
3) I can statement
4) When asking students questions throughout the lesson use a variety of techniques:
stand up if., raise your hand if, thumbs up, half way, or thumbs down. How
do you feel about

5) Engage students in discussion of what it means to be supplementary and whether or

not the angles must be adjacent (this is a common misconception)
6) Power point with group interaction
7) Examples (with class input)
8) Homework

III.

Closure:
Closure comes within the lesson after groups of vocab words. It also comes once the homework
is handed out and students are asked to reflect (summarize) on the lesson before starting the
homework. Examples of this reflection are given (from students) before theyre given time to
work on homework.

IV.

Preparation/reminders:
Power point, homework, key for last nights homework
DONT FORGET AND SCREW UP THE KIDS:
COMPLEMENTARY= SUM IS 90 DEGREES (CORNER)
SUPPLEMENTARY= SUM IS 180 DEGREES (STRAIGHT)
^Does this mean the two angles must be adjacent? Have students engage in discussion of this
and see what they decide. (Be sure to guide them to an understanding that the angles do NOT
need to be adjacent to be supplementary or complementary)
