Fire Safety Math 1

Immaculata University
Instructional Approaches Lesson Plan
Unit: Fire Safety
Lesson: Math
Established Goal: Students will learn to measure length in inches.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.MD.A.1 Order three objects by length; compare the
lengths of two objects indirectly by using a third object.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.MD.A.2 Express the length of an object as a whole
number of length units, by laying multiple copies of a shorter object (the length
unit) end to end; understand that the length measurement of an object is the
number of same-size length units that span it with no gaps or overlaps. Limit to
contexts where the object being measured is spanned by a whole number of length
units with no gaps or over laps.

Enduring Understanding

Essential Question

Measurement (inches) is used to measure Why do I measure?

What is one standardized unit of measthe length of objects.
urement that is used to measure objects?
Objects can also be measured with the
use of other objects.
Students will know

Students will be able to

How to measure the length of objects by

using a ruler.

Students will be able to figure out the

lengths of object by comparing them
with different objects.

Assessment Evidence

Fire Safety Math 2

Performance Task

Other Evidence

Students will measure three fire hoses

(strings) and record their predictions and
actual measurement of each on a graphic
organizer and then share with the class.

Other evidence of will be collected

through teacher observations/questioning and class discussion

Learning Plan

W. The students will be learning about measuring in inches. The standards for this lesson
will be written on the board. Additionally, the teacher will tell the students, Today we will
be measuring pretend fire hoses in inches using rulers.
H. The teacher will hold up a new crayon. The teacher will ask the students if they think they
could use a crayon to measure the length of an object. The teacher will then pass crayons
around so the students can see them up close. This will be an introduction to length.
E. Students will learn how to measure length in inches. First, the teacher will explain what
the meanings of an estimated measurement/prediction and an exact measurement. The
teacher will show students a ruler and show them where the inches are located on it; he/she
will walk around to the table groups to make sure each student sees where they are. The
teacher will then tell the students that they can estimate the length of an object by comparing
its length to another object. The teacher will show the students that the new crayon measures
about 4". The teacher will model measuring the estimated length of the "fire hose" using the
crayon. Next, the teacher will demonstrate how to measure the exact length of the "fire
hose" using a ruler. Then, the teacher will distribute a string to each table group (length is
pre-measured by the teacher), which is to represent a fire hose. The group will work together
to measure the length of their "fire hose", and then report out to the class the length of it.
R. The teacher will then give each student three different "fire hoses", which are each a different length. On their graphic organizer, students will first predict how long they think their
"fire hoses" are by measuring their lengths with a new crayon. After recording their prediction, students will measure their "fire hoses" with their ruler and record the exact measurement (in inches) on their graphic organizer.

Fire Safety Math 3

E. Students will share their predictions and actual measurements of their "fire hoses" with
their table group to check their answers. When each group is finished, a member of each
group will share their answers with the entire class.
T. Students that have difficulty paying attention will be assigned to work with another student. Students that have difficulties with fine motor skills will be given thicker string to work
with.
O. Students will be very engaged in this lesson since it is very hands on. Materials needed
for this lesson include: whiteboard, dry erase markers/eraser, rulers, "fire hoses" (lengths: 3",
7", 10", 12), graphic organizer, pencils, new crayons. Thicker string should be available for
students that have difficulties with fine motor skills.
