Subject/Grade: Math/ K5

Lesson #: 4

Date and Time of Lesson: October 30 at 1:00

Learning Objective: Students will comprehend a poem read to them by using objects.
Alignment with Standards:
South Carolina Common Core Mathematics Standard: K.CC.B.5- Count and
answer how many questions about as many of 20 things arranged in a ling, a
rectangular array, or a circle, or as many as 10 things in a scattered configuration,
given a number from 1-20 count out that many ideals.
South Carolina Common Core Language Arts Standard: RL.K.1-With
prompting and support, ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
Developmental Appropriateness or Cross-curricular connections:
Students should have prior knowledge in counting object and saying number names in
standard order (counting 1-15). It is important for students to understand how to count the
objects and listen as the story is bring told, so that they know how many objects go
where. Students will be interacting through this lesson with me and with the use of
objects.
Assessment(s) of the Objectives:
Lesson Objective(s)

Students will be able to

correctly identify what
numbers were read in the
poem by using objects and
also show how many and
where they belong.

Assessment(s) of the
Objective(s)

Use of Formative
Assessment

Students will be assessed

three times during this
lesson.
Pre: Whole group
assessment- I will have the
class count with me up to 20
by using the number of
school days chart on the
wall. We will break into our
math exploration groups,
which is where the lesson
will take place.
During: Students will be
expected to be actively
engaged and fully participate
throughout the lesson. I will
assess students based on if
they know the answer to the
question when called on.

If students cannot place

the correct number of
objects in the correct
spot, I will re-read the
poem and help them
through it by explaining
where each place is.
Also if they do not place
the correct number of
objects we will stop as
the whole group and
count to 20 aloud.

Dorn 2
Post: Students will be asked
to think of different numbers
for ghost and goblins and we
will retell the story with the
numbers they told.
Accommodations:
For the student who is ADHD, I will have to make sure is on task during instruction by
giving him opportunities to answer questions. During activity time I will have to make
sure he stays on task but making the activity interesting in order for him not to get
uninterested. For my student who is who is an English language learning, I will give him
one on one help when the students begin their independent practice. For my students with
autism and Aspergers, I will give a short summary of what we will be doing sure our
lesson, a detailed explanation and finish with a summary of the lesson so that each one
knows what to expect.
Materials:
House mats
Poem provided by Mrs. Armstrong
Ghost, goblin, and jack-o-lantern beans
Days of school chart
Procedures:
1. I will get the classes attention by saying Class, class in which they will respond
Yes, yes
2. I will tell the student to count with me 1-20
3. After students count to 20 fluently and accurately I will explain what they are
doing at Mrs. Will and Is table.
4. The class will break into math exploration(center) time and I will call one group
to my table and Mrs. Will will call another group to her table.
5. At my table I will tell them Today we are going to be listening to a poem and
placing the correct number of objects in their correct place, according to the
poem
6. I will give each student a hand full of ghost, goblin, and jack-o-lantern beans,
explaining to them which each bean is.
7. Once each student as their beans, I will say Okay boys and girls are we ready?
and they will response YES!
8. I will read the poem, which is attached on page 4.
9. As I am going through the poem I will be monitoring each student to make sure
they are placing the correct number of objects in their correct place.
10. Once students have placed all of the objects on the mat, I will ask them to count to
themselves all of the objects together.
11. I will allow each student to tell me their answer quietly; this way if someone is
still counting they do not feel rushed to finish.
12. Once each child has told me their answer, I will ask them as a whole group How

Dorn 3
many total beans are there?
13. After this, I will tell the students to tell me different numbers of objects. For
example: 7 green goblins floating in the quietly in the air.
14. The students will put the number their classmates are saying and we will count
again how many beans there are all together.
15. Once students have demonstrated to me they can count the number of objects
fluently, I will dismiss them to their centers.
16. I will then call my second group to the table and we will do the same thing.
* Poem is on page four, picture of mat and beans are on page 5*
* Students who are not in the two groups I call will come and do this activity on Friday,
and the students I do call will go to Mrs. Wills table on Friday. *
Activity Analysis:
Activity 1: Students will count aloud from 1-20 as a whole group. This will allow to me
make sure they are fluent in counting, because this is also going to help them with the
main activity we will do at the table.
Activity 2: Students will do a hand on activity that requires them to listen and
comprehend what I am reading aloud to them. They will listen to the poem I am reading
and they will have to place the correct number of objects in the correct place. In the end
of this activity students will have to correctly tell me the total number of beans there are.
This activity will appeal to different types of learners, kinesthetic, auditory, and visual.

Poem provided by Mrs. Armstrong:

It was on a spooky Halloween night

No trick or treaters were even in sight
Four little jack-o-lanterns were all a glow
Sitting on the fence with the wind blowing slow.

Three more jack-o-lanterns were sitting by the ground,

Waiting to scare the trick or treaters who would soon be around.

Four green goblins floated quietly in the air,

Hoping to snatch some candy if they dare

Two ghost were in the window, noisy and white,

Wanting to make this the scariest Halloween night.

In the attic three more ghosts were staring at the moon;

Watching for the witch to fly on her broom.

As the trick or treaters approached, what did they see?

Count and you will find out how many can there be.
