Chapters 1-3

Tell students that before most chapters there will be a Quizlet vocabulary activity. Each
student will need to sign up for a Quizlet account. Click here to access the Quizlet Sign Up
Tutorial.
After Students have signed up for Quizlet, students are to close/put their devices to the
side.
Procedures (15 mins)
Students will watch the Woods Runner Trailer from Wood Runner Website. After viewing
have students make predictions and capture their thoughts on a word processing or
drawing app.
Collaboration Activity: Stand Up, Hand Up, Pair Up Explain that students will take their
devices with them if they need to, and share their predictions with classmates. They will
Stand Up, put their Hand Up, and Pair Up with someone in the class. They will have one
minute to discuss their predictions with each other before they will have to complete the
process again. Tell them this activity will require them to pay attention and share how their
predictions were similar or different to their different partners.

This activity should be repeated three times depending on class size. Set timer for 4
minutes
Transition
Signal to students using timer or screen timer, that activity is over and they need to return
to their seats. Ask students to share how the predictions were similar or different between
the groups they collaborated with.
Summary/Closure
Thank students for sharing responses and tell students who excited you are to start the
novel with them tomorrow.

Anticipatory Activity: (10 mins)
Instruct students to open their devices to either the Quizlet app, or access Quizlet through
the internet. Students are to Study Chapter 1 vocabulary words. Within the Quizlet app
there are choices for students to study. Students can Study using cards that flip between
the definition and the word, Learn where the app will show you the definition and you are
required to type the word, or Match the words with the definition. Walk around and
monitor student devices to make sure students are studying.
Procedures (20 mins) Read page 3-12
Now instruct students to open to page 13. Today students will have 20 minutes to read
pages 3-12. They are to read and keep their device open to the Chapter 1 Padlet.
Students will capture their thoughts as they go along on the Padlet.
Transition (15 mins)
After 20 minutes of reading students will open to their response journal on their iPad and
answer the comprehension 1-4 questions as well at the Text to Self

Have students share their answers and their text to self response.

Now instruct students to open to page 13. Students will have 20 minutes to popcorn read
pages 13-16. They are to read and keep their device open to the Chapter 2 Padlet.
Students will capture their thoughts as they go along on the Padlet.
Transition (25 mins)
After 15 minutes of reading students will open to their response journal on their iPad and
answer the comprehension questions 1-4, as well as complete the Daily life of a colonist
poster.

Have students share their answers/questions/comments from Chapter 2 Reader Response
Journal. Now instruct students to open to page 18 and open to the Reader Response
Journal to preview the questions. Students will have 20 minutes to read pages 18-22.
Transition (20 mins)
Students will answer comprehension questions 1-5 in their reader response journal. This
time the reader response journal will be whole class and students should be prepared to
answer out loud.

Anticipatory Activity: (10 mins) Day 1
Instruct students to open their devices to the Poplet app. Today we are going to
summarize chapters 1-3. Each Summary should include, a place to identify setting and
characters. As a class summarize chapters 1-3. Each chapter should have at least three
events.
Procedures (35 mins) Access StoryBoardThat.com Continues to Day 2
Hand outand go over the Chapter 1-3 Story Board That Project Rubric. Tell Students
today we are going to take our summaries and make a digital story using the website,
storyboardthat.com. Explain that they should use their Poplet to complete the Story
Board. First students are to watch the Storyboardthat.com tutorial. Remind them the first
thing they should do is sign up so they can save their storyboard. Then they can be on
their way to create their digital story.
Transition (with 5 mins left in the period) Continues to day 2
Instruct students to save their work to their Storyboardthat.com account. If they finish
then they need to screenshot their work and upload this into their Google drive or email
directly
