Name of Lesson: Leaf Man
Theme of the week: Fall and Halloween Fun!
Brief overview: The teacher will read the story, Leaf Man, to a small group of students,
engaging them in predictions, summarizing, comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency, and
also create their very own Leaf Man with leaves the students collected earlier in the week.
Standards:
LD 1. Children will develop skills in listening for the purpose of comprehension.
LD 1d. Listens to stories read aloud and shows understanding through body language or by
interacting appropriately.
LD 1f. Makes predictions from pictures and titles
LD 3. Children will develop an understanding of new vocabulary introduced in conversations,
activities, stories or books.
Materials:
The Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert
Leaves collected by students
Crayons
Glue
Construction Paper
Any other materials you would like to use to make Leaf Man
Objective:
To engage students in reading through the use of favorite holidays and season and through
arts and crafts. Students will practice how to make predictions, check for comprehension,
learn new vocabulary, and hear a story read fluently to them. Afterwards, the students will
model what they saw in the story on their own by creating their own Leaf Man. Motor skills
such as coloring, gluing, and placement will be used.
Procedure:
Students will settle in from previous station and the teacher will be ready with the book
and all the materials off the table. The teacher will ask the students if they have ever read
the book. Then the teacher will take the students on a picture walk through the story,
asking periodically what they think is happening. At the end of the picture walk, the teacher
will get the students ready to listen to the story. The teacher will then do an engaging read
aloud for the students, stopping for predictions and assessing comprehension, addressing
vocabulary, and answering questions. Fluency will be modeled throughout the whole story.
After the story is over, the teacher will ask the students if they would like to make their
own leaf man. The teacher will pass out the appropriate materials and will guide the
students through modeling before and help throughout to make their own leaf man. The
teacher will talk about the colors of the leaves and their shapes as they make their leaf man,
how leaves are similar and different, when they change colors, and why.

Assessment:
As the teacher works with the small group, she will make mental notes of how they interact
and respond to the story and prompts. During the Leaf Man creations, the teacher will have
time to jot down notes about what happened during the story and how the students are
doing with creating their own leaf man. The teacher will be looking for the level of
engagement, how well they were able to make predictions, if they observed the
illustrations, if they asked questions about the stories, etc. This is informal and mostly to
gauge where the students are.
Extension:
Create a scenario for the students to create their leaf man in. Ask them why they made him
how he is in that scenario.
Have the students make up a story with their lead man orally to share with the other
students.
