Introduction to our Risk Report

We took a survey about our classmates. We

wanted to see who are the risk takers in the
class. So we came up with some questions.
When we got the command, we immediately
started brainstorming about which questions
would fit the best in our survey. We chose
questions about all different kinds of things of
taking risks. We had some normal questions
like Which transport mode do you usually
use ? but we also had some strange
questions too like Would you send naked
photos ? . To take our surveys we used
Google Docs. With Google Docs, you can
make different types of questions so we have
used the several ways of phrasing, some were
yes/no questions, to answer some questions
were you limited with 1 reply and at some
questions, our classmates could answer with
as many answers they want. We made each
question required so that everyone had to
answer to every question. In the last question
we asked to fill in their name of this demand
we had no expectations, we thought they
would not give their names.

We tried to keep our survey a little airy by

funny accents in our questions or possible
answers. Some examples of funny accents are:
-

In the question of your favorite animal

you could chose for your brother.
After the question about naked photos
asking for their name.
By the question about their gender their
where options ( dont know yet/ mixed)
..

Our report is constructed in this way :

-

We will explain you why we posed the

question.
We will tell you what the question has
to do with risk.
We will show you the results by using a
graph.
We will give our review about the
results.

On the next page, you can see our survey we

published.

Risk Report

Male or Female ?
To properly start the survey we inserted an
easy and general question, the gender of the
interviewee. The interviewee had three
options: male, female, dont know yet and
mixed. As we said before, we wanted to keep
our survey funny and interesting for the person
who fills it in. Thats why we have inserted two
more options, to make people laugh. We dont
show the options in the pie chart above
because none of the interviewees chose for
one of these two options.
It may seem an unimportant question but
reliant on the results of this question we could
perfectly interpret the other questions.
Because of this question we could see the
differences between the replies of two sexes.
As we can see on the pie chart, based on the
results we have received, we can see that men
have filled in our survey more than women.
53,3% of the people who answered to our
questions were men, while 46,7% were
women.

The use of condoms

We examined the use of condoms in our class. This is our report on
the use of contraceptives.

Maybe we can conclude that 53% of the people who responded to our
questions have a long-term relationship with one partner.
Every child gets sexual education in primary
school. They got teached that sex contains the
risk of getting a sexual transmitted infection
such as aids, chlamydia and HIV. The teacher
teached the children to use condoms to reduce
the risk of those sexual transmitted infections,
even when the couple is using another method
of birth control, because a condom gives the
best protection during vaginal and oral sex.
We asked our classmates their opinions of
using condoms during sex. We were a bit
surprised with the results.
From the 15 results, we can see that 8 people,
or 53 percent do not use a condom while
having sex with his or her partner. Three of

them (20%) do use a condom and one

answered that it depends on the situation.
Maybe we can conclude that 53% of the people
who responded to our questions have a longterm relationship with one partner.
We can only give one advice: use a condom as
much as possible. Especially when you are into
one-night-stands and have more than 1 bed
partner.
One month ago, I read an article in the
newspaper that there are at the moment
1.000.000 Erasmus babies. This are babies from
people who had sex on Erasmus , most of them
without using condoms.

The graph above shows us the results of our survey. 15 people filled in the online survey.
3 people tell us they use condoms when having sex with their lover, but 8 people do not use a condom.
Maybe we can conclude that these 8 have a long-term relationship with their boyfriend or girlfriend.
For 1 person, using a condom or not depends on the situation. For example whether he or she is drunk or
not.
3 people did not want to give their opinion.

Risk Report

Where do you live?

The place where you live can affect the risk you have.

Which is the big city closest to where you live?

In our survey we have five people that live close
to Ghent. Ghent is also the city where we go to
school, that reduces a lot of risks. We all know
the most important streets and we can
navigate us in many parts of Ghent. The only
high risk of going out in Ghent is that your bike
can be stolen, a lot of drunk people want to go
as fast as possible to their house and some of
them would steal a bike to do that.
Another city is Bruges, also five respondents
live here. Bruges is a very touristic city with a
lot of tourists and also a lot of cozy bars.
Sometimes go out in Bruges could be
dangerous, for example the knifing of Mikey
Peeters a couple of months ago. Mikey Peeters
didnt anything wrong, but hes the victim of
meaningless violence.
The third big is Antwerp, four people that filled

in our survey are living here. Antwerp has a bad

reputation about the criminal activity and the
kindness of people, but there are also nice
places to visit in Antwerp, for example: the Zoo,
the Meir, Aquatopia, The highest risk in
Antwerp are the pickpockets, people walk
against you and steal your wallet before you
know it.
At least one person lives close to Sint-Niklaas,
its the smallest city if we compare it to the
other three. Sint-Niklaas has the biggest
marketplace of Belgium, on the marketplace
there are always many activities, for example:
soccer matches of the red devils on big screens,
beach volleyball tournaments, The biggest
risk here are also the pickpockets, on big events
you can be the victim of pickpockets.

We wanted to know how

we asked our interviewees

they use most.

Use of transport
In this survey, one of things we have analysed,
was about the modes of transportation
students normally use

We wanted to know how students move

themselves. So we asked our interviewees
which transportation mode they use most.
Being in traffic involves a bunch of risks.
According to the world health organization
there die every year about 1.24 million people
on the world's roads. According to statistics
from the government Belgium, in 2013, there
died 724 people in traffic, 4.947 people got
heavily injured and 49.020 people got slightly
wounded.
When we take a look at the graph we can
conclude that most of the students or 53,3%
uses most frequently a car and that there is a
slightly difference between the two sexes.
Especially women will take a car to move
themselves namely five female interviewees
out of seven . The other two female
interviewees takes a bike or go by foot. None of
the female interviewees makes use of public
transportation. While women take mostly a car,
men take mainly use of public transportation or
uses a car to move. Both transportation modes
have three votes out of eight. The other part of
the male interviewees takes even a bike or go
by foot.
As we said before, being in traffic involves a lot
of risks. The risk depends on what type of
transportation you use. Annually there are
more car accidents but pedestrians and cyclists
are most vulnerable in traffic.

If you have a test, do you stay

We also wanted to know how responsible students are when it comes

to schoolwork.
A student who is living in the city where he
studies, costs annually about 12.000. The
budget goes to the rent, books, food,, and of
course going out. We know that students like to
go out from time to time, about two times a
week. The main reason why they go out is to
keep their social life interesting.
We wanted to know if students still go out if
they would have a test the next day. So we
asked our classmates and we came up with a
remarkable conclusions. One of the conclusions
is that more than half or 60% of the people
would stay at home before a test. Another
conclusion is that only 40% of the interviewees

would stay at home before a test. The last and

maybe most disturbing conclusion is that
33,33% of all interviewees would go out till
2PM.

If you win a free safari trip to

an Ebola country would you
go?

Ebola
With the next question we wanted to know who
would take the risk of getting infected with
Ebola.

We also wanted to insert a question in our

survey about the current events. As everyone
knows, last few months we had to deal with an
outbreak of a new virus in West-Africa: Ebola.
We all know that Ebola is a terrible virus which
has cost already many lives. According to the
UN agency there are now worldwide over 10
million people who got infected and 4.922
people who died by the virus.
Ebola is one of the deadliest and most
dangerous virus known today. The incubation
period, is the period between the infection and
the popping up of the first symptoms, is a few
days to three weeks. In this period where the
disease is evolving within the body. There is a
high risk of contaminating other people
without even knowing. So there is a high risk of
contaminating other people. It is also
dangerous because the symptoms of the virus
are similar to the symptoms of a fever. In a
later stage, when the symptoms are getting
worse, you know you are dealing with Ebola.
Many people are scared that the virus will
spread out, so it is important to keep the virus
under control.
With this question, we really wanted to know
who were the real risk-takers in our class. We
tried to examine this by inserting a tricky
question in our survey. Suppose you win a free
safari trip to a certain destination, but in the
country of destination there are a lot of people
infected with the virus Ebola. Would you make
the trip?
The examination showed us that none of the
interviewees would dare to make the trip. This
because the chance of getting infected is too
high. Men (53,3% of all interviewees) as well as
all women (46,7% of all interviewees) who
filled in our survey have answered no on this
question.

If you go on winter trip, what

would you prefer doing?

Winter Trips

Going on winter sports in the free week after

the exams of January is the perfect week for
most students. There are many agencies that
provide buses to several ski resorts at students
prices.
We asked our class what they prefer doing
when they go on winter trip. Only four of the
six possible answers were chosen. Langlaufing
and sledging arent the sports our classmates
are looking for when they go to Switzerland or
Austria. Although these are the less risky
options in our question.
When you wouldve chosen for langlaufing, you
wouldve had a very physical week with some
bruising from tripping as the only risk involved.
And for the people who choose sledging before
skiing or snowboarding, they could experience
some hard falling but will usually not end up in
plaster.
So in our top answers we find hiking back in
place four with only one vote. Hiking is in my
opinion walking but in the snow. Only risk
involved according to me is an avalanche when
you want to go off road with your tennis
rackets and end up on top of a big load of fresh
snow.
On the third place we find snowboarding which
is a small surprise to me. In our generation,
snowboarding is found to be cooler then
skiing. But many still prefer skiing before
snowboarding. Maybe its because we all learn
to ski first and dont want to learn a whole
week a new sport rather than going along with
your friends and to explore the whole ski area.
Or maybe it is because you want to go very fast
on the track and we all now skis remains faster
than snowboarding. So maybe snowboarding is
less risky than skiing because of the speeds you
can make.

Risk Report

15

On a shared first place we have skiing and aprs skiing. This makes sense because these two belong to each
other. After a day standing on your two skis, you deserved a refreshing drink. Mostly alcohol but it is
therefore not far to the hotel anymore. Nevertheless this involves some risks. When you drink alcohol, you
react and slow and your estimations can be wrong. So more risks to ski against another person on your way
back to the hotel or you can hit a tree or dont see a bump on the track. We can conclude that most of our
class choose to live dangerously when it comes down to choose a certain winter sport. But the most
dangerous options can also be the ones where you are having the most fun.

Do you send naked pictures of yourself?

With the next question we wanted to know
who would take pictures of their naked body
and send them to other people. And from the
results you can see that most people dont do
that and Im happy for that at this point we
have a sensible class. And if they do it anyway it
is to their boyfriend. I was surprised that
nobody answered only on Snapchat because
I thought there are a lot of people who think
that when you send something on Snapchat
nobody else can see this picture. But thats a
mistake because all the pictures send by
Snapchat are stored. The reason why we asked
this question in the theme of taking risk is
because if you send a naked photo to someone
you dont know very well then you know that
you can get troubles with that and most people
know that. But when they send a picture to

their boyfriend/girlfriend they dont realize that

its also a bit risky. If the relationship breaks
they can blackmail you with the naked pictures.
And once the pictures are going around to
some people it is almost impossible to stop it. If
I search on the internet to see what some
Belgian surveys say about this topic I can
conclude we have a class who knows what can
happen if they do something like that and who
doesnt take that much risks as the average
Belgian because according to the Belgian
surveys 1 on 4 young person sends naked
pictures of themselves, and that most of the
times to their boyfriend/girlfriend. They have
even already found a name for sending naked
pictures namely sexting.

Risk Report
When we look at the chart, made of the results
we received, we cant deny that the number
one favourite animal in our class is the dog.
Nine out of fifteen people who took our survey,
chose the dog as their favourite animal.
Other options than choosing for the dog as
your favourite animal were: a walking stick, a
snake, a spider, a turtle, a cat, a horse, a rabbit,
your annoying brother or you hate animals and
click on this option.
The second most loved animal in our class was
the cat. Strange is that only two people voted in
favour of the cat. So now we have resolved the
age-old argument between which animal is
preferred most as a pet. We all know Belgium is
a dog-land. Cats can be nice in their way but
the Belgians look for loyalty of their pets and so
the decision is easily made. Also a cat can
scratch your furniture to dead and thats
something to think about if you want to buy a
cat or dog and you have very expensive
furniture standing at home. But when you
chose for a dog, youll have to watch out for
holes and dog faeces when you take a walk into
your garden. But when you go to the dog
whisperer or dog school, you might reduce the
chance of these excesses of your loyal dog.
Nice to see is that the cat got competition of
the rabbit. They share the second place with
their two votes each. A rabbit is in my opinion a
completely harmless animal you can have at
your home. Unless you let it walk free at your
home, you have to watch out for these little
carrots they hide for when winter is coming.
Number three in our survey is the walking stick,
who shares its place with the option I hate
animals. A walking stick is like the most boring
animal you can have. Most of the time you

18
cant find it at his tropical bowl and when you
can find it, you can see that it will sit there,
waiting for new leaves to eat. When you buy a
animal like this, I think youre safe with your
furniture and the rest of the house.
To finish, we have also one person who hates
animals. This can be someone who had a really
bad experience with a dog for example, or just
someone who is allergic to everything that
belongs to the animal kingdom. I guess we will
never know but its a little bit of a surprise that
there are people out there who dislike animals.
I guess they want to play it very safe if it comes
down to having a pet.

How many cigarettes do you

smoke a day ?

Smokers

If we first look at the prices of a pack cigarettes

the past years, we notice a big increase. Due
several laws on smoking at a bar, restaurant
and others, smokers are having a real bad time
finding the right moment to light up their
beloved cigarette. One pack of cigarettes costs
about five to seven euros. This is a lot of
money, especially when you are a chainsmoker. They need to set a budget for their
cigarettes so they have less budget for other
expenses. This involves a certain risk if you
would ask me. When your car breaks down or
you have an accident and cant go working
anymore, you need to have a reserve capital to
maintain your livelihood. Chain-smokers, in my
opinion, will not have built up a bigger reserve
than normal people, unless these normal
people have any other addictions than
smoking.
I think that in the past years smokers reduce in
numbers. The many laws and campaigns have
paid off and the youth is more aware of the
consequences of smoking. Whether they have
grown a backbone or given less pocket money,
the youth has become more aware.
When we look at the chart, we see that our
class is taking no risk in smoking. Only three
people do smoke and do it immediately good.
From the fifteen students, twelve do not smoke
and the three others smoke in their place. One
student smokes 4 cigarettes a day, another
smokes five a day and the third student smokes
ten or more cigarettes a day. I think we can call
the last one a chain-smoker.
So only three people take a risk in our ninth
question of our survey. I can conclude that this
is a success for our generation.

Gaming behaviour
Which games do you play on playstation or other platforms?

In our tenth question, we asked if the person

does play on any game console and if they do,
which sort of games they play. Most people in
our class have grew up with a game console.
Others started playing in their high school years
and only a few have never touched a controller.
Myself do not own the newest PlayStation or
Xbox but I do game on a weekly basis at a
friends house.
When I was fourteen, I got a Playstation2 and
only had one game: Grand Theft Auto San
Andreas. I could play that game for hours. But
in that period, there was a man called Hans Van
Themsche who shot a little girl and her teacher
on the streets. The police believes it is because
Hans played a lot GTA on his Playstation2 and
wanted to act like one of the main characters in
the game. So many parents got worried and
banded the game consoles out of their homes.
But in our class we see that there are still some
gamers in our class. Most of them play sports
games. Second comes the shooters and the
people that do not game. Third are the racing
games and to finish there is one person who
plays puzzle games.

So in this question, the people had the chance

to cross more than one option. Gamers usually
have more than one game to play. Otherwise it
could get boring always playing the same level
or storyline over and over again.
We see that seven people chose for sporting
games. Examples are FIFA, NBA 2K, Wii Sports,
etc. The risk in these games is only a small rage
quit when you get a goal against you in the
90th minute on FIFA. Six people told that they
play shooter games. I think at Battlefield, Call
Of Duty, Medal of Honour, etc. The risk here is
only some shouting and slamming the door
behind you when your mother calls you for
dinner. Also six people in our class do not
game, I think these are all girls. Only three
people play racing games and only one puzzle
games. The risk in these games are very
minimal.
In my opinion, we are the generation that grew
up with a broad range of game consoles and
many different games to play. We could not
ignore it and so we all have ever tried it at least
once in our young lives.

General Conclusion

Our class is not really risk-taking

Our class does not kick on taking risks. I think we can be assured.
Our classmates do not like dangerous animals as pets, the use of drugs and alcohol is
very limited and we take full responsibility for our actions, behaviour and for school.
