Step 2: State Objectives (Virginia)
3.5 The students will develop map skills by:
a) positioning and labeling the seven continents and five oceans to create a world map;

Step 3: Select Media and Materials


Teachers objective:
History: The third grade student will be able to name and locate all seven continents and five
oceans on a world map.
Instructional Method:
1. Pre-assessment: See how many of the continents and oceans students can name
2. Powerpoint of all continents and oceans on world map
3. Pass out world map worksheetsname continents and oceans
4. Homework: Color-by-number worksheet (color each continent and ocean a different color)
Media and Materials
Computer and projector for powerpoint, World map, World map handouts, pencils, crayons,
notebook paper, continent cutouts.

Step 4: Utilize Media and Material


Prepare the environment:
Students will begin working individually to list as many continents and oceans as they can on a
piece of notebook paper. The teacher will then have the class list them off to see if they can as a
group come up with all twelve answers. After listing them all, the teacher will use a powerpoint
presentation to show each continent and a world map to show where they are in context to each
other. After the presentation, students will paste cutouts of the continents onto a world map
handout (they may use the world map if needed). At the end of the lesson, students will receive a
world-map handout that will be taken home for homework.
Prepare the audience:
The teacher will ask students if they need a quick bathroom break before beginning. After coming
back, the teacher will have the students play a short Simon says game to make sure they are all
paying attention. The students will sit in their seats to begin the lesson, and the teacher will
briefly explain what will be discussed before the lesson begins.
Step 5: Learner Performance
Initial activies:
Students will try to list as many continents and oceans as they can. The students will then watch a
powerpoint presentation emphasizing .
Follow up activities:
Students will have a cut and paste activity, matching each continent and ocean of a world map
onto their correct location. They will have a map worksheet to take home on which they have to
label each piece of the map.
Step 6: Evaluate
The pre-assessment activity will help the teacher see how much the students already know about the
world map. At the end of the week, the students should be able to comfortable name all seven
continents and all five oceans.
