Annotated Bibliography on Animal Abuse in Factory Farms.
MacQueen, Ken. Gone Undercover. Macleans, Vol. 127 No. 25. P 20. 7 July. 2014. Academic Search
Premier. Web. 5 November. 2014.
Ken MacQueen is a bureau chief for Macleans journal, and is also a reformed Ottawa
Parliamentary reporter as well as columnist. The article explores one of Canadas undercover non-profit
animal rights organizations as they expose factory farms and the abuse they put animals through. Some
of these undercover investigations have led to a peaceful protest of some citizens boycotting milk that
come from factory farms. This article seems credible because the author has had a long successful
career of journalism so the work he produces is from experience. The magazine that the article comes
from is well-known in the Canadian area. Even though the article comes from a magazine and not a
scholarly journal, the information is still credible because the sources mentioned are straight from the
argument. The article is also credible in the fact that it was released earlier this year, so the information
is still valid and relevant.
Wilson, Larissa. AG-GAG Laws: A Shift in the Wrong Direction for Animal Welfare on Farms. Golden
Gate University Law Review. (Summer, 2014). Vol. 44 Issue 3, p311-335. Academic Search
Premier. Web. 5 Nov. 2014.

Not much information is presented on the author of this work for she is overshadowed by the
actress with the same name. There are many LinkedIn profiles with the name Larissa Wilson, but none
could be found with Golden Gate University Law Review. This article focuses on gag orders and how
they impact factory farm animals in 2014. The article focuses on how certain laws prevent publication of
photographs or videos of animal conditions in factory farms from being produced and distributed. Most
of these laws also prevent action towards better living conditions among factory farms, and do not allow
for expansion for animal protection laws. The article comes from a scholarly journal, and with that in
mind it is known that the article was reviewed and edited by staff that is there specifically to perform
that job. Even though not much is known about the author, the credibility comes from that the work is
being published through a scholarly journal. The article itself is loaded with citations that can be referred
to with the readers desire. The article was released the summer of this year, so the information is still
relevant and credible because the culture has not changed in one season.
Arora, Namit. On Eating Animals. The Humanist. (July/August 2013).Vol. 73 Issue 4, p26-31. Academic
Search Premier. Web. 5 November. 2014.
The author of this article attended Stanford and his essays have appeared in multiple magazines
and journals throughout his career. The author is also published through many museums and academies
and is licensed by these institutions for his photos and essays. The article focuses on the slaughter of
cows in American factory farms. This factor is met respectively by the people that consume these
tortured animals but who also love their pets in their homes. The article explores torture through
treatment of animals, but also torture through the food they are fed. Like many animals living on factory
farms, cows are fed hormone ridden food to make sure the cows are fattened up so that the farm can
harvest as much meat as they can off the animal. The author as well as the magazine in which it is
published offers much credibility, for they have been recognized as a popular and legitimate source of

information. This article is aimed more towards a general audience, so the layout of the article is
different from one that you would see from a scholarly journal. There are more uses of color to signify
importance, and there are a few color photos. The magazine also offers information without any
citations, so this could lower the credibility. But overall it is a great source of information. This article
was released last year, so the information in it is still regarded as relevant with that manner.
Nickelsburg, Monica. 5 Modern Diseases Grown by Factory Farming. Theweek.com. The Week
Magazine. 7 November. 2013. Web. 5 November. 2014.
The author of this article has a work history involving journalism. She has worked for Transient
pictures, The Daily Beast, NBC, and Forbes, so her credibility among journalists is high. The Week
website offers her other works, which varies from topic to topic. She seems to express her information
to a general audience and not just scholars. The article expresses that there are certain diseases that
humans can get through animals that are living this close together in filthy conditions. These animals are
injected with hormones, and they live in an environment where they inhale, sleep, and walk around in
other animals filth for a majority of the day. The article provides an interesting read, and an informative
one, and it also offers citations with links for readers to go and explore more information that was
received from that area. The citations are from high end studies from centers of human and animal
interaction. This would be a great source to add to how poor living conditions can affect human lives.
That article was just released last year, so the credibility is still there with that aspect.
Steele, David. Factory Farms Wide Net of Pain and Destruction. www.organicconsumers.org. Organic
Consumers Association. Fall 2009. Web. 5 November. 2014.
The author is associated with a .org site, which is not the typical .com formatting. The format of
the site resembles a scholarly journal article rather than a general audience read from the Rolling Stone.

The organization was founded in 1998 and is an advocacy group for consumer protection. The article
expresses many of the cruelty of the factory farms straight from the beginning of the article, telling a
story about how thousands of male chicks are ground up at a time simply because the farm has no use
for them. The article lists many of the atrocities committed towards animals along with how it ultimately
affects human life through disease. The article does not have any citations in text, or any associated with
a bibliography but it does offer more information using keywords to search its site. Since this
organization has been around an adequate amount of time, and because of the amount of information
presented through the site, it provides a credible source for research papers. It expresses multiple views
on the harming of animals but how it also harms human life. This article is a little older, but it reaches
that five year mark of credibility. If there were a newer source with this same information, it would be a
wise decision to use that source rather than this one for five years can change a culture.
Shermer, Michael. Confessions of a Speciesist. Scientific American. (2014). P 79. Academic Search
Premier. Web. 5 November. 2014.
The author of the article is an American science writer, and an Editor in Chief of the magainze
Skeptic, as well as a columnist of Scientific American. He has also produced multiple books about
scientific phenomenon. Shermer received his B.A. in psychology from Pepperdine University, and a Ph.D.
in the history of science from Claremont Graduate University. This article explores the moral
relationship with humans and other mammals as well as claiming that the animal abuse on factory
farming is on par with the Holocaust. A video clip is also provided that leads to a bull being slaughtered.
The article provides in text citations but does not offer a bibliography page. The author and the
magazine are credible sources because they produce work that fits their expertise. This source was
released this year, so the information is still relevant.
PR Newswire. Mercy For Aniams Hidden Camera Investigation Exposes Horrific Animal Abuse at Tyson

Pork Factory Farm. Pr Newswire US. (2013). Academic Search Premier. Web. 5 Nov. 2014.
The article comes from a purely news based organization. They are a source associated with
new developments and associated towards releasing new information to a general audience. The
audience is shown a hidden-camera video of animal abuse associated with a major meat distributor,
Tyson Foods that is sold in multiple grocery store chains throughout the US. The article releases the
source from which they received their information, and ways in which the video can be viewed. The
article does not offer much information other than the basics of how animals are treated and how the
meat is raised in order to feed the millions of hungry Americans in fast food conglomerates and chain
grocery stores. The source is a great eye opener but it would not provide an accurate source to be used
with a research project. With this article being released last year, the article is still relatively relevant
with todays culture.
Munro, Lyle. Teaching & Learning Guide for: The Animal Rights Movement in Theory and Practice: A
Review of the Sociological Literature. Sociology Compass. (2012). Vol. 6 Issue 6, P511-518.
Academic Search Premier. Web. 5 Nov. 2014.
The article comes from an academic Journal that is peer edited and reviewed. Any information
that is released from the journal is looked over thoroughly, and the sources used are evaluated and
given for the audience to consider. The author has produced many books about cruelty and its forms.
The article states that the animal rights movement has been the one that has had the least amount of
attention. This lengthy article summarizes some of the cruelty present in factory farms, as well as ways
in which humans have been neglected these issues and allowed them to continue. The end offers
strategies and tactics that people may use in order to restore animal conditions to a place where they
may again be stable and not so tortured throughout their lives. The article comes with many citations to

allow audience members a sense of security when using it for a research paper. The citations have been
thoroughly researched so the audience can know that the article is fully legitimate in its claims and it
backs up these claims by the excessive use of citations. The source is only two years old, making it a
relevant and credible source within the timeframe.
Farm Forward Against Animal Abuse in Factory Farming. Natural Foods Merchandiser (Jan 2010). Vol.
31 Issue 1. P. 12-14. Academic Search Premier. Web. 5 Nov. 2014.
The article comes from a non-profit organization and advocacy group for animal rights. An
author is not presented other than the organization itself. The article provides insight on the cruelty of
animals in factory farms and provides ways to lessen animal abuse and torture among these commercial
farms. The article also promotes sustainable agriculture. The article does provide a few citations to other
useful information as well as to where they received their information. This article would not hold up to
arguments against its credibility. There is not much to the article, and the article does not provide clear
evidence for the author or the authors background. This source is a little older, so the information
presented is a little less credible than the newer versions of the same information. Nonetheless, this
article can still be seen as relevant and credible for it has not reached that five year grace period
deadline.
Sunaura, Taylor. Animals, Ableism, Activism. Journal of Visual Art Practice. (Dec 2013). Vol. 12 Issue 3.
P. 235-244. Academic Search Premier. Web. 5 Nov. 2014.
The article is a scholarly journal, so the content of the article is peer edited as well as reviewed
so that any mistakes or any uncited information can be fixed and distributed to the audience with
accuracy. The authors previous work also deals with animal rights, so credibility can be made within the
author for her extensive work and publication with the subject of animal rights. The article itself talks

about how animals in factory farms are not seen as a life but as a product and her wish to depict this
belief in works of art. The article has an abstract, as well as a list of keywords to associate with the
article so that the audience can get a better sense of who and what the article will be about. Overall,
this source is a credible one, and the images provided can be used in a research paper if the researcher
desires. This article is still relevant and credible because it was released under a year ago.
