Reflection

My eportfolio contains signature pieces that portray my progression and practice

in the education program at Dixie State University. Founded on Dixie State University
Department of Education DESERT model standard, these experiences indicate evidence
that I have become a competent, caring, and qualified educator. I have showcased these
experiences through my eportfolio.
My comprehension lesson, which I created in my ELED 3300/3900 class,
demonstrates that I am a competent educator. This lesson plan indicates that I am capable
of creating and implementing differentiation in my lessons. As I do this, I am able to
meet the needs of each one of my diverse students (DM1). This lesson plan identifies the
classroom contextual factors. In this class, there were five students with speech IEPS,
one ELL student, and five advanced students. I had the opportunity to establish
modifications in my lesson plan to meet each one of these individuals needs; as well as
the other students. These modifications were used throughout instruction, activities,
grouping configurations, and assignments. I also included SIOP throughout this lesson.
By doing so, my lesson included multiple opportunities for interaction, supplementary
materials, vocabulary, and meaningful instruction that met all learners needs. The
assessment indicates that my advanced students, ELL learners, and low-level readers met
the lesson objective. This also provides evidence that my accommodations were
effective.
I believe I am a caring educator as represented by my classroom management
plan, which I created in my ELED 3250 class. It showcases my ability and willingness to
create a caring and secure environment for my students (DM4). My classroom
management plan includes a management philosophy, behavioral case study, procedures
and policies, as well as a letter of introduction to my students and parents (DM6). My
letter of introduction allows parents and students to get to know me personally, as well as
my expectations of both the parents and the students. This plan will help me implement a
classroom that students can feel confident and safe in. As I execute this classroom
management plan, students will be in a safe and caring environment.
I believe I am a qualified teacher as showcased in my science lesson with
technology, created in my ELED 4300 class. This lesson displays that I am confident in
my subject matter and my use of instructional strategies (DM3). This lesson indicates
extensive research regarding water weather larger rocks into smaller rocks. It also shows
my ability to provide connections to my students, and allows them to learn through
hands-on exploration. Students were able to investigate the weathering of rocks through
high level thinking questions, and discovery learning. This lesson proves that I am
qualified in helping students discover and reach learning with success.
As well as providing students with hands-on learning, this lesson plan indicates
proof that I am capable of using technology to assist my teaching (DM2). I used a
PowerPoint to provide examples, as well as definitions and pictures. I also used a video
regarding weathering of rocks, to help provide a connection for students. Overall, my

science lesson plan indicates my willingness to provide modifications, and extend

learning by using technology.
In conclusion, my experiences during the education program at Dixie State
University are recorded and displayed in my eportfolio. This documentation represents
my growth in the education program through benchmark assessments. My differentiated
comprehension lesson indicates that I am a competent educator, because I am able and
willing to make accommodations in my lesson plans to help diverse students reach
success. My classroom management plan shows I am a caring educator, because I am
able to implement a caring and safe environment for my students. Lastly, my science
lesson with technology represents that I am a qualified educator, because it shows I am
able to engage students in discovery learning, and higher-order thinking. Reflecting on
my education (DM5) indicates that I am willing to learn from my experiences to help me
improve, and better myself. Overall, reflecting helps me strive to become a more
effective teacher. Each benchmark assessment provides evidence of the Dixie State
University DESERT model standards. Each assessment represents that I am a competent,
caring, and qualified educator.
