Dear Senator Gutierrez,

I am currently a student studying elementary education at Harold Washington College. I

am writing this letter to suggest that Chicago Public School should have a smaller class size
policy in both middle school and high school. It is said that class size does affect the way a
teacher teach and also how well a child learns. Classrooms should be constructed of 20 students
so that both teacher and student could have the best outcome. It was found that children in
small classes performed better in literacy and mathematics, and that there were particular
benefits for children from ethnic minorities (Finn & Achilles, 1999; Nyeet al., 2000).
This is because teachers are able to have a better interaction with each and every one of his or
her students. This cannot occur if the teacher is teaching 35 students.
Due to the amount of student in the classrooms teachers cant focus on teaching instead
they are focusing on how to manage the classroom. However, the most important about having a
smaller classroom sizes is how it would impact the student learning. Small classes may have a
positive impact on student engagement behaviors, which include the amount of effort put
forth, initiative taken, and participation by a student( Schanzenbach, D.W. (2014)). Not only
will student learn better but they will also have the ability to interact with the teacher and his or
her fellow peers. Smaller classes are more engaging than larger ones. Fewer students are less

distracting to each other than a large group of children. Teachers have more time to cover
additional material in the classroom. Instead of letting go teachers, we should be hiring more so
that students can get a better education.
Tennessee has a program called The STAR Project. This project focuses on how well
class reduce will affect the students learning outcomes. The study was conducted with a
controlled group of 10,000 students. Classroom are reduced from 22 through 26 to 13 through 17
students. This project had great outcomes. They found out that having smaller classrooms will
increases academic performance. We should try to utilize this program here in Chicago to show
that cutting down classroom size will have a positive impact on the students well-being. If we are
not able to use this project an alternative is co-teaching model. This is where there are two
teachers in the classrooms of 35 students.
These results show that students academic skills were very successful because of the
amount of students in the classroom. We need to help students try to strive and to achieve their
potential. I really believe that our state can benefit from this. More student would become more
successful. I really wish to have your support on this issue. I look forward from hearing from
you soon.

Yours truly,
