Teamwork & Leadership RAFT BUILDING

Name: *
James Terry

Describe the task *

In detail, what was the aim of the task? How many teams? What was the team dynamic? Timings? Rules &
restrictions?
We as a group were split up into to two teams. The way we split ourselves up
was we were given the number one or two, the ones would be one group and
the twos would be another group. That was how we split ourselves into groups
, after that each of us were given certain restrictions that we had to follow. An
example of a restriction was one group member was not allowed to use their
hands whilst another was not allowed to speak. Each team had two members
that could not speak, two members that could not see and two members that
could not use their hands. and one two group members that could do
everything. This made it extremely difficult to finish the raft within the
allocated time frame which was an hour and a half.

What was your role in the team? *

What did you do? How did you contribute? Leader or teamworker?
In the team I played the person who could not use his hands but could speak and
see. This ment my job was to be the monitor evaluator. I was the monitor
evaluator because I could see, speak and make constructive criticism on things
that I thought were not done properly or could have been done better. I believe
that I adopted the team worker role but not completely, meaning that I did help
achieve the final goal but I could not do any physical work which was very
frustrating for me to just watch. I had to use my communication skills to give my
contribution to the group.

How did you perform as an individual? *

For the M & D criteria make comparisons with other individual performances in your team and relate to theory.

As an individual It was difficult for me because I would have liked to help a bit
more but because I was not able to use my hands I often found myself standing
around watching. Unlike me Alex who could not speak found other ways to
communicate whilst creating the structure to the raft. Alex in my opinion would
be the leader distributing the roles and making decisions.
The theory side to this follows more of Belbins theory of roles. I believe I was a
co-ordinator. I started to prioritise some roles instead of other and allocate
people to tasks much like a leader but not as much as someone else in the
group. There was another individual who much like me adopted more or less
the same role as me. They took the role of being a Plant as many of the
decisions were brought to the light by them which many went into play.

How did you perform as a team? *

For the M & D criteria make comparisons with other team performances and relate to theory.
As a team I think that we performed extremely well. I say this because we had
no arguments within the group we all knew what our roles were and we all did
what we could to help out. Unlike in the other group where some of the group
members were just sitting around not doing anything and waiting to be told to
do something instead of asking. In our case our group would be at the
performing stage whilst the other group would be at the storming stage where
they are still figuring out who does what and weather or not they are good at
doing it.
I believe that our team followed Tuckman's theory of team development, we did
everything in the theory we formed, stormed, normed, performed and
adjourned. The forming stage, firstly we picked out who was going to do what
job and then we continued from there. We would continue to form and then

eventually start to storm. In the storming stage we had an overload of ideas of
what the raft should look like, because Alex was the leader and has had the

more time consuming. This resulted in our overall victory in this task.

What were your weaknesses? *

Communication, problem solving, time management, supporting others, physical abilities, confidence,
motivation, resolving conflict, praise, questioning, body language, listening, awareness, creativity etc
My weakness are praise, body language, creativity and questioning. I lack in
creativity because I prefer to follow and do things that I already know exist and
work. Body language is a weakness of mine because I slouch a lot when doing
tasks which makes it look like I am not trying. Another weakness is time
management although I did ask numerous amounts of times how long do we
have left I did not give time limits for when each section should be finished by.
Questioning the team on how they felt and if there was anything I could do was
another one of my weakness, because I had no hands it made me lazy I would
just let the others do the work which when I reflect on it now looks bad.

How could you improve for next time? *

Make future recommendations for yourself, your team and other individuals / teams.

Next time I would like to be able to use my hands so I can contribute more to the
group and provide more assistance rather that just standing around and doing
nothing. For the team next time I would like them to be more active and to have
more enthusiasm. Because I could not use my hands it was very frustrating for me,
I think if the sorting of the draw backs was better I believe I could have made a
greater impact on the group. I do believe that it was done this way to make it
more challenging.

Was there any conflict in the group? *

If yes, describe why and how was it resolved? If no, what did the leader do to ensure this was the case?
There was no conflict between our group members. This is because the leader
distributed the role and task's best suited to peoples strengths and weaknesses.
This helps because members of the group are kept in their comfort zones and are
less likely to complain which might start an argument. There was no conflict
because we all knew each other and had worked together previously so we all
knew our strengths and weaknesses and worked to support others.

How else could you use relevant theory to analyse the overall performance today? *
Leadership styles, Belbin, Tuckman, Adair, Honey, Margerison & Mccann, Woodcock,
The team work theory where a group forms, storms, norms performs and adjourn,
this could be used to help create groups for the next task. For example swap
members that work well with other members to see if that would make a better
result. For the future I need to be aware of time and be a bit more serious when
dealing with the two group members who can not see. Although we did win the
challenge I think that the margin was too close and if we had been a bit more
serious we could have extended our lead.
