What is the Schools Role in Supporting Students?

There are 2 programs that focus on improving learning and decreasing

inappropriate behaviors.
Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)
Response to Intervention (RTI)

What is PBIS?
A proactive approach to managing behavior problems in the school.
PBIS is a school-wide preventive approach to teaching behaviors.
The school comes up with school-wide rules and expectations and teaches the students
what each rule means and how to follow them.
PBIS services are divided up into 3 Tiers:
Tier I: Universal Interventions
Tier II: Targeted Interventions
Tier III: Individualized Interventions

PBIS Tiers
Tier I: Universal Tier
Effective for 80-90% of students.

On this level, all students are provided with the school-wide rules and expectations.
Teachers role is to teach students the rules, model the rules, and provide students with
opportunity to practice the skills.
Example: How students are expected to walk down the hallways
-Single file, no talking, eyes on the teacher, etc

PBIS Tiers Continued

Tier II: Secondary Tier

Tier III: Tertiary

For students who are not showing progress on Tier I may be

placed on Tier II for more supports.

For students who are not showing progress in Tier II.

Extra Supports include:

- Small group instruction
- Individual instruction
- Extra opportunities to practice skill
- Check in check out

- Behavior Contracts
Students will be assessed to determine if Tier II is helping
them.

Tier III is more intensive and individualized.

Students receive extra supports and more individualized

instruction from teachers on behaviors.
Tier III is where a student may have a Behavior Intervention
Plan (BIP) as part of their Individualized Educational Plan
(IEP).

RTI Tiers
RTI is similar to PBIS in regard to Tiers, but RTI is primarily focused on
academics not behaviors.
RTI is a proactive approach to identifying students who are struggling with
academic performance and to provide them with interventions to help them
succeed.
RTI requires assessing ALL students and determining their risk level of
potential academic failure.

RTI Tier I
Tier I: Universal Tier
This is where ALL students are assessed to determine their academic status.

The curriculum that teachers go by is detailed and teachers are required to

follow lesson plans.
Students receive evidence-based strategies and instruction.

RTI Tier II and Tier III

Tier II: Secondary

Tier III: Tertiary

Aimed for students who are at risk for academic failure.

Intensive and individualized

Students receive more individualized and group instruction.

Student receive an IEP with instructions of supports they

will receive.

Interventions include:
-Check in Check Out
-Peer Assisted Learning (PALS)
-Peer Tutoring
-Cooperative Learning

Interventions include:
-One-to-one instruction
-Access to special education services
- Students divided into groups

Students IEP is evaluated to ensure that the student is

improving.

Both RTI and PBIS

Aim to prevent problems with academics and behavior as oppose to resorting to
punishment or exclusion.
Use evidence based practices to assist struggling students
Use a Tier System
Students start in the Universal Tier and will move to Tier II or III after being assessed.
Students who struggle on Tier I will be either placed in II or III.
Individualized!
*Preventative and Proactive!*
