Lesson one Day one


Daily topic: Johnny Appleseed Citizenship: Social Studies
Standards:
2.4.1 Define the character traits of good citizens and discuss examples of responsible citizens
2.4.2 Describe the responsibilities of citizens in the United States
Objective: - The learner will create an illustration that displays the qualities of a good
citizen and be able to defend their examples.
Procedures:
1. Read Johnny Appleseed by Reeve Lindbergh to the class.
2.

After reading the story, pull up an inspiration web on the smart board.

3. Have the students brainstorm favorable traits that Johnny Appleseed had.
Create a web of all of the students ideas on the board.
4. Discuss each trait with the class and talk about if each characteristic makes
Johnny Appleseed a good citizen and what it means to be a good citizen.
5. Have the students create illustrations in paint showing them doing something
that demonstrates good citizenship. They should create four illustrations
showing them being good citizen and insert them into a PowerPoint
presentation.
6. Each student will present their pictures to the class and talk about how what
they are doing in their picture demonstrates good citizenship. Each student
should be able to describe four things in their illustrations that show how they
are being good citizens.

Special needs: Special needs students will be paired with a regular education student to
assist them in their illustration.
Non-native: Non- native students will be pulled into a small group after the students
have broken off to further reinforce what was discussed during the brainstorming. The
students will also be encouraged to talk about what a responsible citizen is in their native
culture so the student can feel more included as well as introduce the other students to
different cultures.
Gifted: Gifted students will be encouraged to think of more than 5 qualities to illustrate
on their illustration.
