- I will ensure that the video is fully loaded on Safeshare.TV and the Smartboard
- I will ensure that the tooth cutout is on the whiteboard with a magnet
Introduction
Time
I will ask students to write down one way that they use teeth on their sticky
notes. One student from each row (the 5th student in each row) will collect
the sticky notes and put them onto the tooth at the front. I will say Wow,
3 min.
look at all these ways we use our teeth, we need them for so many things,
so its important to take care of them.
I will ask How do we take care of our teeth? Why? What is plaque?
- Students will raise their hands if they have a question

Lesson
SafeShare.TV video
- I will play a video about brushing and flossing
- I will ask students so how many times do brush our teeth a
day? How many times do we floss?
- I will ask how do you brush? How do you floss?
- I will ask what about other things that happen when we dont
brush our teeth? What about our breath? Doesnt it get icky
because of all the germs?
Cavity Apple
- I will say so if we dont brush we get plaque, our teeth get
yellow, we get cavities, and bad breath. And cavities rot on the
inside.
- I will be holding the apple with a rotted hole and say so, this is
apple is like a tooth, it rots when it has a hole in it, the hole in
this apple is what your cavity will look like and give the apple
to the first row of students to pass to the back of the room and
look at it
- While students are looking at the apple I will talk about how
the same rotting happens in between teeth if we dont floss
and say so, you wouldnt put this apple in your mouth would
you? No? Then you wouldnt let your teeth get like this in your
mouth!
I will be watching students to make sure they are engaged, and listening to
student answers.
Brushing teeth
- I will say so how long do we brush our teeth for? 2 whole
minutes? Oh my goodness! And we brush in circles, on the top,
on the bottom, in front and behind.
- I will say we are going to have pretend toothbrushes and
brush for 2 - whole minutes, I wanna see if you can do it,
because its a really long time and most of us dont!
- While a 2 minute brush your teeth song plays in the
background, students will air brush their teeth with me for
two whole minutes
I will be watching students do the proper brushing technique and seeing if
they are brushing for a full two minutes.
Flossing teeth
- I will select one student to hand out lego pieces, and one to
hand out floss
- I will tell students so lets say the bumps on these lego are the
teeth in your mouth, and the playdoh is plaque, this is what
your teeth really look like if you dont floss! And if you dont
floss for a long time it can get this bad! And if you dont floss
properly it can get this bad! So what I want you to do is floss
the teeth properly, by gently gliding the floss all along the
teeth gaps to make them nice and pretty again!
- Students will floss their lego teeth
I will be walking around the room watching students floss plaque and food
out of their pretend teeth.
Closure
So did the teeth look better after we flossed them nicely? So what are we
all going to do before bed tonight and tomorrow morning?
I will ask students do you guys think after this youll brush your teeth and
floss more?
I will say I am really impressed with your lego piece teeth, now do the
same thing with your real ones!
Okay clean up time, lego goes back in the bin, flossers go in the garbage!

If time remains in the period, students may colour a picture of a toothbrush and a mouth.
I believe this lesson went over well because of the continuous strong visuals and quick
activity switching. The video was short enough to keep their attention, and so was the
passing around the apple activity. The apple made students interested to learn how to
prevent cavities as they were thoroughly unimpressed with how gross rotting looks. I also
think it was a good idea to make students air brush their teeth for two minutes to see how
long it really is. One thing I could work on, as usual, is watching classroom behavior,
although this was one of my best lessons.
