Video Composition Project:

Creating a Public Service Announcement about Multimodality

For your video composition project, youll create a 30-60 second public service announcement (PSA)
video advocating for multimodality. You design the audience, context, and nature of the message to suit
your personal tastes. You may choose to aim this PSA towards students considering taking ENGL 429.
You may design this for teachers considering using multimodality in their classes. You may decide to use
this PSA as an opportunity to talk about how multimodality can increase accessibility for individuals with
disabilities.

Assignment Objectives:
Develop an argument advocating for multimodality in the genre of PSA
Explore the affordances of video as a medium for composing
Design your PSA for a real audience
Caption your video for accessibility to various audiences
Post your video to YouTube and embed in your blog
Familiarize yourself with a video editing program (Windows Movie Maker or iMovie)
Clarify a rationale of design, connection to course content, and awareness of choices in design and
production of an image composition in a Statement of Goals and Choices (SOGC)

Statement of Goals and Choices (SOGC)

As with all composition projects, you should submit a SOGC (in Bb > Assignments > Image
Composition SOGC).
In your SOGC, you should respond to the following core questions:
What, specifically, is this piece trying to accomplish--above and beyond satisfying the basic requirements
outlined in the description and objectives? In other words, what work does, or might, this piece do? For
whom? In what contexts?
What specific rhetorical, material, methodological, and technological choices did you make in service of
accomplishing the goal(s) articulated above? Catalog, as well, choices that you might not have
consciously made, those that were made for you when you opted to work with certain genres,
materials, and technologies.
Why did you end up pursuing this plan as opposed to the others you came up with? How did the various
choices listed above allow you to accomplish things that other sets or combinations of choices would
not have?
At the end of your SOGC, list all the actors (human and non-human) that played a role in helping you
accomplish this task: scholars, tools, technologies, individuals. This is like a rolling credits for your
project.

Presentation
As with all projects in this class, you will be asked to share your PSA in class. We will be viewing them
on the last day of class, Wednesday May 1st.

Submission of Project
1. PSA should be uploaded to YouTube and embedded in your blog. If you do not have a YouTube
account, youll need to create one. Feel free to create a sock puppet if you are not comfortable using
your own name.
2. SOGC should be uploaded to Blackboard by Weds, May 1st. Please, provide a link to your video in
YouTube in the SOGC itself.
Note: As with other projects, I will provide workshops to walk you through video editing software, in this
case, Windows Movie Maker. You are welcome to use a different software, if you are more familiar with it.
Also, I will provide many resources in the Technology Resources folder for additional help and
support.
