Science Reflection
After reading the science framework I have reflected on the various pedagogies an
educator needs to effectively teach science in the elementary classroom. For instance, science is
not just one topic that is being taught, rather one subject that has different connectives that can be
integrated for students to learn from. Engineering, language arts, and science can be combined
all into one lesson because similarities among multiple subjects will ultimately reinforce each
individual lesson learned. An educator must make sure that connectives are seeing in everyday
life so that students may understand a broader spectrum. All three connectives can be combined
from obtaining new knowledge, plan experiments, carrying out a hypothesis, arguing from found
data and construct explanations with peer collaboration and critical reasoning. These are a few
steps that I would like to see carried out in my classroom to ensure that students learn how to
make sense of the creative process while developing their language arts and engineering skills.
All in all, I believe that teaching effective methodologies for science requires me to facilitate
intensive practices that may seem like a fun science experiments to enhance student involvement,
and the evolution of their learning adaptions to higher education.
In past classes such as my SMT 416, PHY 300, and PHY 300 Lab have prepared me to
teach science very well. My SMT 416 class was all about Earth Science. In this class I recapped
on previous gained knowledge about investigation and experimentation procedures. Some of my
most memorable lessons revolved around the rock cycle and how it effected earth formation. My
Physics class and lab were helpful because I was able to better understand the physical sciences

such as the motion of objects (momentum, velocity, speed), elements (and their combinations),
metal properties, differences between chemical and physical changes, compound mixtures (living
organisms being one of them), and electrical and thermal conductivity. My professor for the
Physics 300 lab showed my class various experiments that could be conducted inside and outside
of the classroom that could reinforce and enhance any lesson. What I liked about this lab is that
we were able to work in partners for all the experiments, yet we each had an individual journal to
write down our findings and reflections. What was most helpful about these three classes, was
that I had them all at once in the same semester. I was able to see for myself how each lesson was
correlated; therefore, every lesson had information that was supported and strengthened. Due to
this personal experience, I know the importance of incorporating multiple subjects in my lessons
to reinforce the learning outcome of my students.
I feel prepared to teach earth science, life science, and physical science to any grade level
student. I have extensively gone the extra mile for myself by attending science workshops, group
assessments with science professors, and even one on one lessons with tutors. I myself worked as
a tutor for science and math in my sisters elementary school where I worked with focus groups
after school to aid struggling students. The only area in which I feel I have a disadvantage in
science is conducting class experiments. I have not had much experience in teaching how-tos
to a class, and this makes me apprehensive because I would like my lessons to be near perfect,
otherwise I feel as though any science experiment gone wrong may confuse my class. To avoid
any distress during any class demonstration, I plan to research my experiment and conduct a pre
experiment in my own time so that I can be prepared to the class.
The artifacts that I am going to include are my journal entries from my Physics 300 lab
that show journal reflections. I also want to encompass my Earth Science class experiments that

depict hypothesis experiments and data. I want to include these artifacts because they are the
perfect examples of how students learn best. I enjoyed myself learning in all three classes
because my professors gave opportunities for students to work together, and participate every
day. What I valued most about these classes is that I saw the importance of student involvement
in the classroom. I learned a lot more when I was conducting experiments rather than read, and
answer questions from the text. I want to be that kind of teacher that allows students to discover
and gain new information through guidance, be the guide on the side, not the sage on the stage.
