English Language Arts Reflection

English Language Arts content is important because they develop a person's reading,
writing, listening, and speaking skills. These skills are necessary for effective communication.
Teachers need to have an understanding of the English Language Arts goals. They need to
understand that there is a correlation between English Language Arts, Math, and Science and that
a student must excel in English in order to do well in other courses. Teachers must have strong
reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language skills in order to make sure their students
have the same skills. These skills are necessary for advancement in college, their career, and
their civic life.
All of my classes at CSUDH have prepared me to become more proficient in English, but
more specifically to become a better writer. My ENG 305 taught me how to enjoy different
genres of literature. I learned to read for enjoyment and not just for academic purpose. My ENG
308, taught me the symbolism found in children's literature and that there is more than just the
Disney version of a story. My ENG 350 prepared me in becoming a better writer and to not fear
in class essays. My LBS 355 helped me become a better writer. My ENG 487 class taught me
how to teach English through other subjects. I can truly say that initially when I saw the number
of English Courses I had to take to graduate, I questioned my desire to go into this field. With
time, I enjoyed many of these and feel that they have developed my English skills. I feel I am
well prepared to teach grammar, do storytelling, and develop my students' reading
comprehension. These will be skills they will need to succeed. Although I feel I am well
prepared to teach writing, my editing skills may need a small adjustment, but I am pretty sure
that those skills will develop with experience.

The artifacts on this page are two papers that I wrote in my LBS 355 class and a project I
did in my ENG 487. According to the Common Core Standards students must be able to
demonstrate increasing sophistication in all aspects of language use, from vocabulary and sytax
to the development and organization of ideas, and they should address increasingly demanding
content and sources. From Kindergarten to the Fifth grade, students should be able to show
growth. The standards from all grade levels show that the student must be able to write an
opinion piece and give facts and details of the topic they are writing about. The papers will
demonstrate my writing skills. As an English language learner, writing does not come easy.
These papers will show that with time and experience, writing skills can develop and improve.
The second artifact, the project, demonstrates how to teach plural nouns through Social Science,
Native Americans. Plural nouns are found in the Conventions of Standard English of Kinder
(CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.K.1.C-Form regular plural nouns orally by adding /s/ or /es/ (e.g.,
dog, dogs; wish, wishes) through third (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.3.1.B-Form and use regular
and irregular plural nouns). This project, with the adjustment to grade level, demonstrates how
other subjects can be used to teach English grammar and develop vocabulary. It also shows my
computer skills, as the worksheet, game, and cross word puzzle were created by me.
