Social Media Affect Everything
Social media are applications that allow users to create an account to participate in the
social network, such as: Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Tumblr, and etc.
Even though media has decreased, they are still finding a way to get their message across
through Facebook. Media has devalued the image of a woman portrayed as an objected instead
of a human being. Facebook affects everything in our society from television industry and
business to an individual in a negative way because an individual sees the image of a perfectlooking model making the individual want to be like the model.
People are paying more attention to Facebook that affects the television industry because
television industrys audiences are not watching commercials. While the television is on
commercial kids, young adults, and adults are on the Facebook checking what post has been
added to their news feed. People are paying less attention to the advertisement they are supposed
to be watching. Societies are watching less television due to that television commercial has to
connect with their audience through Facebook. The television shows have to create a Facebook
accounts in order to keep their audience. The video on YouTube, The Influence of Social
Media, stated, We no longer search for the news, the news find us. It is sad to say, but its
true because on Facebook, there are many posts of advertisement as you could see in figure1.
Figure 1 is of Revolve clothing reaching out to their audience since many of their audiences will
be on Facebook, the audience will be able to find out of that Revolve clothing is coming soon to

Grove even though they did not watch the advertisement on television. Facebook has taken the
audience of the television industry.
Facebook for many reasons affect an individual, but mainly because society is eager to fit
in the ideology of beauty. Facebook has contributed to the idea of females having to be beauty in
order to be accepted and feel beautiful in society. As you could see in Figure 2, the
advertisement is of a young woman, skinny, acne-free, and beautiful, even though the
advertisement on television has decreased over the time they are getting to their audience
through the social network. The advertisements still have the same purpose in mind as they are
posting it on Facebook. The purpose of seeing this beautiful woman and wanting to have the
same clothing as her to feel the same young, skinny, acne-free, and beautiful. Everyone wants to
fit in society by being beautiful like advertisement portrays. The Globalization of Beauty:
How is Ideal Beauty Influenced by Globally Published Fashion and Beauty Magazines stated,
Previous research has documented the significant influence of mass media on appearance
norms, which suggests that increasing exposure to mediated beauty enhances internalization and
fantasizing by women and girls about obtaining the characteristic body shape and facial
attractiveness promoted by the media (Bissell, Yan 195). Mass media is influence women and
girls to have the ideal appearance but since the mass media is getting through their audience
through Facebook. Now these women and girl not only did they see it on magazines but now
online as well.
Furthermore, Facebook are affecting businesses because they need to involve themselves
with Facebook. The Influence of Social Media had a statistic that 80% of companies use social
media for recruitment. The ways businesses are hiring their employees are through social media,
so that means that face-to-face interviews are decreasing. Meaning that Facebook allows

employers to go through employees Facebook, to get a sense of who they are. Employees dont
have their first impression with the employer, now they are communicating through via email as
you could see in figure 3 to apply for a job. In figure 3, they are all good-looking people, there is
nobody over-weight with acne. Even in advertisement of hiring people you see good-looking
people with no problem with their physical appearance. Help Wanted: Overweight People Need
Not Apply it all began with a job listing on craigslist looking forward to hiring people, except
those with a problem with their physical appearance. This craigslist ad was discriminating
against the people with acne, scars, blemishes, and etc. on their face, but especially against the
people with an overweight problem. Elisa Mystie Ayala believes it was being discriminatory
toward people with an overweight problem. She said, Whether you are three hundred pounds or
hundred pounds, the way you perform on a job has nothing to do with your appearance. Many
businesses advertisement has good-looking people in which it leaves out the so call unattractive
people.
The opposite side could believe that Facebook does not affects everything in our society
in a negative way because an individual just want to feel and look beautiful and have nothing to
do with the social network. The image Facebooks post images of attractive models do not affect
an individual. Becoming Bodies: How Preadolescent Girl Consume and Produce Media in 21st
Century America mentions, An online survey of 1,000 girls aged between thirteen and
seventeen for the Girl Scouts of the USA found that nearly 90 percent of the girls surveyed said
the fashion industry (89 percent) and/or the media (88 percent) place a lot of pressure on them to
be thin; three out of four girls said that fashion is really important to them (McGladrey 1).
Media play an important role in teenager girls because they feel the pressure that the media sets
upon them with the advertisement of perfect looking model. Since, few people pay attention to

the mass media due to the usage of Facebook, mass media has got their message across the social
network.
Facebook has become a magazine where images of beautiful women are posted, but
behind the whole meaning of the image is to portray the ideal women. The standard of how
women have to look in order to be accepted by society. Facebook has taken over the audience of
the television industry in order to reach to their audience; they had to create an account to keep
their audience. Even businesses were contributing in the ideal beauty of people in society.
Society should not care about appearance because what counts is the personality of the women.
