Setting: You are a middle manager in a private hospital. The hospital Board of Trustees considers the
hospital a service agency and wants additional focus on accountability, which the Board considers critical to
the success and sustainability of the hospital.
Issue: Currently employees are operating in silos, lack cohesiveness, exhibit distrust toward one another
and the management and do not always follow the hospital-established standard. Examples include not
always washing hands, not providing assistance to visitors and guests, not respecting privacy and
confidentiality, answering patient and guest's questions with "I don't know," and when asked to complete a
new task saying "Its not my job."
Assignment: You have been assigned the task of developing employee ownership and accountability, or
employee buy-in. You are to develop a health leader's plan for a team training developed to deal with the
specific issue above. Devise a plan for training this hospital team to cultivate employee buy-in. The team
must focus on superior performance and outcomes. Your plan must address the 8 team training principles
identified in the article by Salas, Granados, Weaver and King in this learning module.
Principle 1: Identify critical teamwork competencies use these as a focus for training.
Principle 2: Emphasize teamwork over task work, design for teamwork to improve team processes.

resources, guide the process.
Principle 4: Task exposure is not enough provide guided, hand-on practice.
Principle 5: The power of simulation ensure training relevance to transfer environment.
Principle 6: Feedback matters it must be descriptive, timely, and relevant.
Principle 7: Go beyond reaction dataevaluate clinical outcomes, learning, and behaviors on the job.
Principle 8: Reinforce desired teamwork behaviorssustain through coaching and performance evaluation.
