Writing the English I Research Paper

The first time you quote from a work, you should mention the title of
the source and the authors name. Then you can make a parenthetical
citation with just the page number.
For any more reference to the same source, just use the last name.
Use strong, interesting verbs. Do not use a verb unless you
understand what it means. Dictionaries are available in the classroom
at all times.

Topic Sentence (step 1)

Answer the question. Examples:
What was prohibition, why was it instituted, and what were the
effects of it?
Prohibition, the banning of alcoholic substances, was instituted in 1920 with
disastrous effects.

Describe the Fitzgeralds extravagant lifestyle.

The Fitzgeralds lifestyle was full of parties and alcohol despite their unstable
finances.

What was the role of women in the 1920s?

Women in the 1920s were, in some ways, both expected to be super-feminine
while also being allowed to be one of the boys.
In the 1920s, the role of women depended on their social class.

Transition and Context (steps 2 and 3)

Transition: keep it simple, but dont use for example every time.
If youre looking for a new transition, Google it. Make sure you
understand what it means before you use it. Thus is a concluding
transition, which means it should be used when you are wrapping up
an idea.
Context: what is happening at the time of your quote? For quotes
from the article, context is based in fact. When Prohibition was
initially instituted and gangsters realized they could make a profit
Context IS NOT when the author of the article was talking about
Prohibition Its boring and unnecessary.

Source + verb and Evidence (steps 4 and

5)
Source + Verb: Use full names or last names only. NEVER EVER use
only the first name.
Your source + verb might be ______ writes or it might be longer:
the author of the article says that Prohibition created a black
market
For The Great Gatsby: you still need to use character names or the
narrator for step 4. Do not use Fitzgerald for step 4.
Evidence: this is what youve been searching for up until now. Choose
the best quote for the job!
Your evidence does not have to come from the same source for the
body paragraphs. Mix it up; make interesting connections.

In-Text/Parenthetical Citation (step 6)

For articles/library sources: if you use the authors name in step 4
(source + verb), you do not have to include it in the parenthetical
citation. It would just be the page number inside parentheses.
For The Great Gatsby: use Fitzgerald inside the parentheses. For a
second quotation from the novel in the same paragraph, you do not
need to use Fitzgerald in the second citation.

Relevance (step 7)
Always write two sentences of relevance.
Relevance explains how your evidence is important to the matter at
hand. You need to justify your reasoning for using that particular
piece of evidence. Explain the quote. What is the author trying to
say? And how does it connect to Gatsby or the research?
