Standard I: Procedures and Routines

1. Entering the Room:
-Students will be expected to go to their assigned seat, get out their journal, and begin
working on bell work.
2. Where to put backpacks/cell phones
-All backpacks and handbags will be expected to remain on the floor. Bags on the
desks will not be tolerated. Cell phones must be turned off. If I see a cell phone I will
confiscate it and the student must get it after school from the front office.
3. Taking Attendance
-Immediately after the tardy bell rings I will stand in front of the class and take roll.
4. Tardy Procedure
-Students who are tardy will be marked down on the roll and miss the opportunity to
get points for bell work that day.
5. Turning in Homework
-Each class will have a specified basket or container where they will place all written
assignments. The contents in each basket will be collected at the end of each day.
6. Late Work
-Students will be allowed to submit late work. However, each school day the
assignment is late the point possible will drop 10%
7. Returning Graded Assignments
-I will personally return graded assignments to the students at the beginning of class
while they are working on their bell work. Doing so in the beginning will allow the
students to look over their grade/work and ask any questions they may have.
8. Absences
-I will adhere to the school policies pertaining to absence protocols. I will report my
roll sheet to the office of those marked tardy or absent 15 minutes after roll is taken.
9. End of Period Procedures
-Students will be expected to remain seated and working until the bell rings. Any
student who gets up to wait by the door will be asked to sit down and possibly leave
class last depending on the circumstances.
10. Obtaining Help With Assignments/Tutoring
-Students in my class will have the opportunity to peer edit each others work and if
any further assistance is needed they may come to my class during designated hours
before or after school.
11. Participation in Group Discussions and Group Work Procedures
-During discussions I will use an automated program which will select a student
randomly to answer a specific question or give input to the discussion. I will try to go
through the entire class at least once per class period. Those who give an appropriate
answer will receive participation points while those who choose not to answer will

not and will have to make up the points some other way or possibly lose those points
all together.
12. Restroom/Hall Pass Procedures
-I will give each students two hall passes per semester and will have them write in
permanent marker their name on the passes. The student may use the hall pass for a
five minute bathroom break during the semester. Those who do not use their hall
passes will be able to turn them in for extra credit at the end of the semester.
13. Throwing Away Trash and Sharpening Pencils
-Students will be expected to come to class prepared but if they must get out of their
seat for any reason they must raise their hand and ask for permission. Failure to do so
may result in the loss of participation points for the day.
14. Students Completing In-Class Assignments Early
-Students will be expected to bring personal reading material to each class. If a
student finishes his/her in class assignment early they will be asked to get out their
reading material and read quietly until the class is ready to continue or the bell rings.
15. Lost and Found
-There will be a lost and found bin in an enclosed location by my desk and if students
can identify an item they misplaced then the item will be returned to them. At the end
of the month all items remaining in the lost and found will be handed over to the
office or thrown away.
16. Emergency Drills: Fire/Earthquake/Lockdown
-For earthquake and fire drills my class will adhere to school policies and procedures.

Standard II: Arranging Physical Space in Your Classroom

1. Teacher access to all parts of the classroom
-Students will have complete access to one entire wall in the class room. This is
where they can turn in assignments, store their class journals, and find all past
assignments and class materials. Students should not be going through any other area
in the classroom looking for materials without my permission. Because the class
room will be set up in a double-U shape I will be able to access all sides of the class
room and be able to stand in front of or behind any particular students desk.
2. Desk arrangement to show optimal layout for instruction and student tasks
-William Shakespeare wrote in one of his plays all the worlds a stage. I want to
design the front of my class so that a presentation or performance can be appreciated
by every seat in the class room. The desks in my class room will be laid out in a
double-U shape. I think that having two rows of desks eliminates the possible
problem of students not being able to see the front of the classroom. It also eliminates
the problem of myself the teacher not being able to see each student from the front of
the classroom.
The students should be situated so that they do not have to turn their heads too
much when they look at the front of the classroom. As a teacher it will be much easier
to look around the classroom and make eye contact with each individual student. This
will not only allow for stronger presentation, but also make it easier to identify
students who arent paying attention or might be on their phones.
The double-U shape will also help for test taking and group activities because
from the front of the room I will be able to see who is looking down at their paper and
who is looking at their neighbors paper. Because there is already a good amount of
space in the front of the class room it will be easier to push aside the desks a little
further to do class activities.
3. Minimize disruptions caused by high traffic areas in classrooms
-The biggest traffic area in the classroom will be the designated wall where students
will have access to turn in assignment and get class materials. There will be a garbage
can and a pencil sharpener in the area as well.

Standard III: Rules, Consequences, and Recognition

Rules: Create and Post at least six classroom rules that reflect behavioral expectations
1. Respect everyone who enters the classroom,
2. - Come to class prepared (with all materials) and on time
3. - Work hard on all assignments, projects, tests, etc.
4. - Participate in class discussions with appropriate comments
5. - Listen appropriately to me or anyone who "has the floor" in the classroom
6. - Comply with teacher requests timely and without argument
7. - Feel free to discuss any issues with me appropriately.
Consequences
a. Verbal procedure: If a student breaks a rule I will verbally remind them of my
expectations. If the same rule is broken multiple times by the same student I
will inform the parent/guardian via email.
b. Parent/guardian notification procedure: If a students parent/guardian needs to
be informed of their students behavior in the classroom I will send them an
email asking for compliance. If I do not receive an email in return or the
student continues to break rules I will call the parent.
c. Administrative procedure: If a student is a nuisance to the classroom and their
parent/guardian has made no attempt to influence their student to behave I will
inform school officials of the problem.
Recognition procedures for rewarding student success: Once a week I will email at
least two students parents commending them for the work or behavior of their
student in my classroom. Further recognition will be communicated between myself
and other school officials.

Standard IV: Attention Getters

Provide three attention getting classroom strategies
I will have three different attention getters based on the severity of the environment.
1. If students are a little rowdy or talking while I am talking I will simply raise my hand in
the air in spirit fingers motion and wait until everyone is doing the same quietly before
I move on. Anyone who's just driven 90 yards against huge men trying to kill them has
earned the right to do spirit fingers.-unknown
2. If students are engaged in small group discussions and multiple students are talking, I
will say clap one time and clap once, then clap two times clapping twice, and finally
clap three times all the while expecting students to join in as soon as they realize I need
their attention.
3. Finally in extreme situations where students are almost yelling, I will blow a whistle and
hold my hand up and expect students to raise their hands as they become quiet again.

Standard V: Beginning of Year Letter to Parents and Students

Dear Parents/Students:
I am pleased to welcome you to my English class. My name is Jordan Loo and I am a first year
teacher at __________ High School. I am very eager to begin my career teaching students about
the wonders of literature. I believe my fire as a new teacher will allow for an enjoyable learning
experience for those in my classroom and I cant wait to get started. I have put together my
classroom expectations and disclosure statement for your benefit as follows:
COURSE DESCRIPTION: High School English focuses on giving students the skills they need
to gather information, to think critically about it, and to use it for meaningful communication.
These skills include reading, metacognition, writing, speaking, listening, viewing, and
presenting. The course will challenge students to think independently and communicate
thoughtfully.
OBJECTIVE: As a school this year, our language arts curriculum will follow the
national Common Core Standards. These standards seek to raise the achievement levels of
our nation's students and focus on critical writing, reading, and thinking. There are four strands
of the Common Core for language arts, and each strand has several areas of emphasis:
Reading:
- Key ideas and details
- Craft and structure
- Integration of knowledge and ideas
- Range of reading and level of text complexity
Writing:
- Text types and purposes
- Production and distribution of writing
- Research to build and present knowledge
- Range of writing
Speaking and Listening:
- Comprehension and collaboration
- Presentation of knowledge and ideas
Language:
- Conventions of Standard English
- Knowledge of language
- Vocabulary acquisition and use

MY EXPECTATIONS: The two basic rules for my classroom are be responsible for yourself and
be respectful to others. High school students should be able to come prepared to class with their
materials, be on time, follow directions and turn in high school level work. Students will need to
think critically and ask thoughtful questions. When in doubt, be modest in how you dress. Be
school appropriate in your language and in your behavior. I expect everyone to be courteous to
each other in class and to show good character. You are in high school. Come prepared to class
every day ready to learn. If you are consistently unprepared, I will contact parents/guardians to
help resolve the issues. In order for class to be successful, the following expectations need to be
met every day by every student:

The students will:

- Respect everyone who enters the classroom,
- Come to class prepared (with all materials) and on time,
- Work hard on all assignments, projects, tests, etc.
- Participate in class discussions with appropriate comments, and
- Listen appropriately to me or anyone who "has the floor" in the classroom,
- Comply with teacher requests timely and without argument, and
- Feel free to discuss any issues with me appropriately.
CLASSROOM SUPPLIES: students will each be expected to bring a functioning pen or pencil to
class every day. Each student will also be expected to provide a notepad for daily journal
activities. I will not accept stapled papers as a journal. If there is no possibility of attaining a
notebook please talk to me on the first day of school. As a class we will be using (textbook)
(novels) etc. which will be provided by the school.
I am very excited for the school year to begin. Please contact me if you have any questions at any
time during the school year. Thank You!
