Grade 1 Five Senses

Science

Lesson Objectives:
After reading about the five senses and watching a video on taste, the students will observe and
video each other reacting to different foods according to saltiness, sweetness, bitterness, and
sourness with at least two items in each category. The students will then create an audio response
to identify and explain their reaction to each category.
Standards:
English Language Arts Standard CCSS.SL.1.2
Ask and answer questions about key details in a text read aloud or information presented orally
or through other media.
Indicator:

This will be evident when students respond to their reactions to each tasting and describe
which category it belongs to on the iPad within their small groups.
This will be evident when students describe what items they put into each sense category
using Kidspiration and why they put each item into that category.

Technology Standard CCSS.W6

Use a variety of age-appropriate technologies (e.g. drawing program, presentation software) to
communicate and exchange ideas.
Indicator:

This will be evident when the students respond to their reactions to each tasting and
describe what category it belongs to on the iPad within their small groups.
This will be evident in the independent practice when the students create a Kidspiration
and determine which pictures belong to each of the five senses.

Engaging the Learners:

Students will watch a video on students tasting different food items and how they reacted to each
one and the way it tasted.

Materials:

iPads
iMovie app
Voice Thread
SMART Board
Numbered containers with slices or pieces of: dill pickle, lemon, bitter chocolate, orange,
potato chips, pretzel, jelly bean, mint candy
Kidspiration

Learning Strategies:
Cooperative learning, group discussion, direct instruction, teach demonstration, small group

Exceptionality:
The student who is an English language learner will be provided with content specific
vocabulary words prior to the lesson.
The student with a significant grapho-motor disability will use a voice to text application for the
writing assignments.
Differentiation of Instruction:
Tier 1: Students will be given the food and which category it belongs to and how it would make
someone feel.
Tier 2: Students will be given examples of different foods and what category they belong in.
Tier 3: Students can seek guidance from teacher but otherwise will independently answer and
create the assessment independently with no assistance.
Developmental Procedures:

The students will form small groups of 3 or 4.

The students will familiarize themselves with the four different categories: bitter, sweet,
sour, and salty. What does salty taste like? Describe bitter tasting? What foods do you
think taste sweet? sour? Why?
The students will use an iPad to record each other tasting each food and their reactions to
each. How do you think you will react to the different tastes?
The group will get a small taste of each of the following foods, dill pickle, lemon, bitter
chocolate, orange, potato chips, pretzel, jelly bean, and mint candy.
The students will then record each other stating at least 1-2 sentences on how they
reacted and state in which category the food belongs.
The students will check off on their worksheet which category each food should be listed
under.

Students will record a sentence or two on their reaction and explain which category the
food belongs What are the different tastes? What are other similar foods that can be
listed under each category? How did it taste?

Assessment:
The students will record themselves stating which food they tasted and which category it
belonged to based on their reaction to the taste test. The student will describe how it tasted
((sweet, bitter, salty, sour), if they enjoyed it, and how it made them feel).

Independent Practice:
Following the lesson on the five senses and taste, the students will create a Kidspiration graphic
organizer. The students will create 5 categories: sight, hearing, taste, touch, and smell. The
students will drag at least 4 pictures that can be used for each sense into each category. The
students will incorporate pictures for each sense and use audio to describe what it is in the title.
Direct Teacher Intervention:

The teacher and student will work together using a five senses online game to practice the
different senses during an extra help session.

Academic Enrichment:

The student will incorporate audio in the Kidspiration graphic organizer for each
category describing and defining each sense and categorizing items in each sense.
