Topic 2 Lesson 1 Envision Math

Grade: 1st
Topic: Finding Missing Parts of 6 and 7
ALCOS:
MA(1) 4. Understand subtraction as an unknown addend problem. [1-OA4]
MA(1) 6. Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction
within 10.
Student Objectives:
The students should be able to
1. Find the missing part of a whole when given the whole and one part.
2. Find the missing parts of six and seven when given the whole and one part.
Materials
Pencils
Envision Student work packet 2.1
Activboard or chart paper
7 cubes or counters for each pair of students
1 paper bag for each pair of students

Common Core Review
Review parts of six. Draw a part-part-whole mat the Activboard, showing 6 as the whole. Hold up
six cubes. Let's review some different ways to make six. If I keep one cube and I give one cube to
_______, how many cubes does he/she have? Fill in the numbers of cubes you have and the
number of cubes the student has. Repeat for 2 and 4, 3 and 3, 4 and 2, and 5 and 1.
Today our focus question is, How can we find a missing part of 6 or 7?
Explore
Show the students that you have six cubes. Place them into a cup or bag, then pull out 5. Tell the
students, I had six cubes in all. Five are right here next to the bag. How many are in the bag? How
did you find the answer?
Give students time think of an answer. Call on several students to give their answer and the
strategy they used to find it.
Strategies to highlight: remembering the parts that make 6 and counting on
Fill in number one on the front of the Envision packet. Repeat for a part of seven.

Pass out a bag and six cubes to each pair of students at their desks. Tell one student in the pair to
put some cubes in the bag and leave some cubes out of the bag for their partner to see. The partner
should try to figure out how many cubes are hidden inside the bag. Each partner should fill in
number two on the Envision packet.
Pass out one more cube to each pair of students. Have students take turns leaving a missing part
in the bag and filling out numbers three and four of the Envision packet. Walk around and ask
students to explain their strategies as they work.

Explain
Come back to the carpet and review the focus question. Our focus question was, 'How can we find
a missing part of 6 or 7?' How have we answered that question so far?

Allow students to share the missing parts of six or seven that they found.
Watch the Envision Visual Learning video.
On the Activboard, complete the Guided Practice section of the students' 2.1 Envision packets as
a whole group. Reinforce strategies that they have been using throughout the lesson. Read the Do
you understand? question and discuss answers. Read the instructions for the independent practice.
Allow students time to complete the independent practice on their own. Circulate to each table as
needed to help.

Elaborate/Evaluate
Read the problem solving page questions out loud for the whole group. Take up packets to check
the problem solving page for understanding.

Topic 2 Lesson 2 Envision Math

Grade: 1st
Topic: Finding Missing Parts of 8
ALCOS: MA(1) 1-OA4 Understand subtraction as an unknown addend problem.
Student Objectives
1. Find the missing part of a whole when given the whole and one part.
2. Find the missing parts of eight when given the whole and one part.
Materials
Envision 2.2 math packet
eight counters for each student
pencils

Common Core Review on the carpet
Show the student eight cubes. I have eight cubes in all, but now I have put some of them behind
my back. How can you figure out how many I have hidden?
Yesterday we talked about how to find missing parts of 6 and 7. Today we will learn how to
find a missing part of 8. Our focus question is, 'how can a missing part of 8 be found when the
other part is known?'
Explore
Show students eight cubes. Cover two of them with a sheet of paper. Say, I put 8 counters on the
table. How can I find how many counters are covered?
Send students back to their desks. Pass out eight cubes and a piece of paper to each student. As one
student turns away and closes his or her eyes, the second student covers some of the eight counters.
Then the first student finds the missing part, drawing pictures as needed. Have students record their
answers on the front of the Envision packet. Take turns to repeat the activity and complete the page.
Walk around and ask students to explain their strategies as they work.
Explain
Come back to the carpet to discuss the parts of eight that the students found. How have we found
missing parts of 8 so far? List the parts on the board and allow students to explain their strategies.
Watch the 2.2 Visual Learning Envision video.
Remind students that the strategies they have been using are helping them to find the missing part
of a problem when they know one part and the whole. Display the Guided Practice section of the
student Envision packet.
Do the guided practice section together as a whole class. If students give the wrong number for
the missing part, guide them to check their work by adding the part they know and the missing
part to see if they make 8.
Students return to their desks to complete the Do you understand? and the Independent practice.
Elaborate/Evaluate
Read the problem solving questions out loud for students who cannot read. Check students' work on
the independent practice section and the problem solving section.
