*There are no stairs here at the ECEC, nor do they have pegs, large zippers, or allow children to

play with jars with lids and bead strings.

Toddlers Observed:

Carter (2)
Annaysha (2)
Aniyah (2)
Sam (3)

Gross & Fine Motor Skills:

Scribbles vigorously:
o Annaysha loves to color. Ms. Vincent laid out a large piece of paper and
she went to town.
Jumps in place:
o Carter seemed to have extra energy today and I noticed him jumping
around.
Walks on tiptoes:
o *Never noticed any of the kids walking on their tiptoes
Place one 2 block on another 2 block
o The class did block play today and Sam loves to play with blocks. Literally
almost the entire hour I was there Sam played with the blocks.
Scribbles with large crayon on a large piece of paper:
o Again, Annaysha was stuck to the butcher paper coloring for a while as
well as a few other children but the others lost interest quickly expect for
Tamim. Tamim was the only child other than Annaysha that stuck to the
paper for quite a while coloring and scribbling.
Turns 2-3 pages in a large book while sitting in adults lap:
o The children arent allowed to read the large books by themselves
however Clara loves looking at books and looked at one while I was doing
my observation. Annaysha will sometimes bring a book up to me but as
soon as I start reading to her she runs away and gets distracted by
something else.
Holds pencil and makes marks on sheet of paper
o When the children were coloring and scribbling on the paper they werent
using pencils they were using crayons and markers.
Builds a 4 block tower with 2 cube blocks

*There are no stairs here at the ECEC, nor do they have pegs, large zippers, or allow children to
play with jars with lids and bead strings.

o The blocks that Sammie was playing with werent necessarily cubes and I
couldnt tell what size they were, they were different sizes.
Additional Comments:
o Sammie likes building towers and putting colors together. I can tell
watching him and his interactions with others that he is ready to move up
next year and when I asked a teacher she said that yes, he was in fact
moving up.
Gross & Fine Motor Skills
Draws an arc on a piece of unlined paper with a pencil being shown how:
o I didnt really notice children drawings arcs, most of the drawings were
incomprehensible and mostly scribbles.
Turns a doorknob that is within reach using both hands:
o Annaysha is somewhat obsessed with the classroom doorknob and every
time someone walks in or out they let Annaysha close the door for them.
Additional Comments:
Cognitive Skills:
Ability to search for a hidden object:
o *No one played hide and go seek with anything during this hour
Deferred imitation of an adults novel actions on objects after a long delay:
o Clara, like before, likes to scold children after the teacher does. She doesnt
necessarily novel actions on objects its normally just repeating after the
teacher.
Engages in make-belief play:
o All of the children engaged in dramatic play and today it was in the
kitchen.
Says first recognizable word:
o Annaysha is still having trouble speaking full sentences. Every one of the
other kids can speak in sentences however Annaysha is behind. She is
started to say more words such as different animals but she has trouble.
Expands vocabulary from 50-200 words:
o All of the kids except for Annaysha.
Combine 2 words:
o Like I said before all of the kids can speak and talk in sentences except for
Annaysha.

*There are no stairs here at the ECEC, nor do they have pegs, large zippers, or allow children to
play with jars with lids and bead strings.

Sorts objects into categories:

o Once again Clara is very good at categorizing objects and I noticed
Sammie today when he was playing with the blocks that he sorts the
blocks into colors. When he builds towers he makes each row a certain
color.
Takes turn in games:
o *Didnt notice any children playing specific games.
Additional Comments:
o Annaysha is still not as developed in her vocabulary as the other children
but like I said above, she is starting to say more words.
Social and Emotional Skills:
Displays self-conscious emotions of shame, embarrassment, guilt and/or pride:
o Sam is warming up to me and is beginning to feel more comfortable
asking me questions.
Can verbally name some feelings:
o Clara tells it how it is and lets the other kids know when she doesnt like
something or when shes upset. If someone takes something from her she
tends to yell and tell kids she doesnt like them.
Displays empathy:
o *Didnt notice any of the kids showing empathy.
Joins in play with familiar others:
o Clara normally plays by herself while Carter and Sam are little busy bees.
Carter and Sam played together today.
Complies with simple directions:
o Most of the children do what theyre told and with this age group you
normally see some resistance. Clara does have a bit of an attitude and will
tend to pretend she cant hear you when you give her directions to follow.
Shows gender-stereotyped toy choices:
o Carter played with dinosaurs again today and he told me that his favorite
animal was a Rhino. He also played with the blocks with Sammie and I
saw something that I found funny- while Sam would make towers with
any color of blocks, Carter wouldnt even touch the pink blocks. I
happened to ask him if he could add pink blocks because it was my
favorite color and he told me pink was a girl color.
Displays self-control:

*There are no stairs here at the ECEC, nor do they have pegs, large zippers, or allow children to
play with jars with lids and bead strings.

o no. one. has. self. control.

o They are toddlers so they still act on impulse most of the time.
