1. E-mail Questionnaire
Curtis P. Plotkin, Director of the Environmental Health and Safety Office at CSUF,
emphasized that writing is extremely important in his field, often deals with SOPs. Leo
Lopez, Chemical Hygiene Officer, sent me an SOP they developed as an example, and he
explained its importance. There was consensus with most of the participants in that
having knowledge in writing and creating SOPs would be beneficial in the long run.
2. Criteria Chart: See (Appendix I)
3. In Person Interview
Dr. Kim emphasized the importance of having good technical writing skills for any job.
He noted that the current technical writing course for health science major is a good, but
he recommends taking other writing courses aside from the required ones. He mentioned
the importance of writing SOPs because they are used in the workforce regardless of
what your job entails.
4. Online Research
An online search yielded many examples of SOPs used in different places of work and
effective ways to writing SOPs. These documents vary in the type of information being
relayed, but they have similar conventions. Some SOPs include images as a part of their
conventions to better relay the message. The purpose of many SOPs is to inform people
and to allow them to carry out certain tasks by just reading them and following the
instructions.
