Frequently Asked Questions (Sample)
(By:B K JHA)
1. What is point of contraflexture?
Ans. The point at which bending movement is zero is called point of contraflexture.
2. What are sagging and hogging moment?
Ans. Bending moment is taken has positive if it tends to sag (concave upward) the beam, and it
is taken has negative if it tends to hog (concave down) the beam.
3. Define shears force and bending moment.
Ans. The force which is trying to shear the beam is known as a shear force.
The moment is trying to bend the beam is known as bending moment.
4. What is stress?
Ans. Internal resisting force per unit area is known as stress.
5. What is unit of shear strain?
Ans.There is no any unit for shear strain.
6. Define Poissons ratio.
Ans. It is ratio of lateral strain to longitudinal strain.
7. What is the SI unit of youngs modulus?
Ans. Its SI unit is N/m2 .
8. What is volumetric strain?
Ans. It is the ratio of change in volume to original volume.
9. What is shear modulus?
Ans. It is the ratio of shear stress to shear strain.

10. Define beam.

Ans. Beam is a structural member subjected to transverse shear load.
11. What is difference between engg stress and true stress.
Ans. In engg stress we are using original initial dimension whereas for true stress we are using
instantaneous dimension to calculate stress.
12. Why engg stress is known as conventional stress?
Ans. Because we are using original initial dimension to calculate stress so it is known as
conventional stress.
13 what is flexural rigidity.
Ans. EI.
14. What is torsional rigidity.
Ans. GJ.
15. What is the polar moment of inertia of circular section having diameter d.
Ans.

d4.

16. Define section modulus.

Ans. It is the ratio of moment of inertia to the distance of outer layer fiber with neutral axis.
17. What is the SI unit of polar section modulus?
Ans. m3
18. What is torsional stiffness?
Ans. It is defined as the torque required to produce unit angle of twist.
19. What is the SI unit of torsional rigidity?
Ans. N-m2.
20. In stress strain diagram Hookes law is valid upto elastic limit or proportional limit
and why?
Ans. Hookes law states that within elastic limit stress is proportional to strain. So this law is
valid upto proportional limit because proportional limit is within the elastic limit.
