Diversity Reflection Essay

Within the state of Utah Eviction based upon someones sexual identity is still legal. If a
landlord or building supervisor suspects or has knowledge of you identifying by a separate
sexual identity is currently enough probable cause for eviction or termination of employment.
(Web. 26 Nov. 2014. <http://utahpoliticalcapitol.com) stated that even though same sex marriage
has been legalized whiting the state of utah that you may still be evicted based upon your sexual
identity. This is one of the many problems that still community but it is not the only one that
might come to mind. Some of the others are racism, classism, and sexism.

One example of an issue that is very strong within the community right now is the
Ferguson case, where an African American teen was shot and killed. This is making our
community outraged and feeling emotions of sadness and anger towards the police force. There
have been multiple peaceful demonstrations held within the U.S. with the exception for a few
states. One thing that I feel contributes to these officer involved shooting is the barrier between
culture and the ability to not completely understand what the person is attempting to
communicate to you. There are many inconsistencies. As (Amanda Shirts) said Ferguson,
Missouri is burning.

With the laws and how they are written. some of them cover unlawful protests and
gatherings and other law are set in place to protect your individual rights as a person. I think that
in the textbook (George, Diana. "A More Perfect Union." Reading Culture Mycomplab Access
Card. S.l.: Addison-Wesley, 2011. Print.) gives a good example of how thing were in a time of
war and distress. Ultimately I believe that things have changed drastically; within the last ten
years we have experienced school shootings, officer involved shootings and many cultural and
diversity issues within the U.S. than I have seen in quite sometime. Although When I was
younger I may have not been aware of the things that were happening around me, But I still feel
like I knew what was happening within the community.

In addition I believe that if the police had proper training in cultural identification and
understanding there might not be as many police to pedestrian problems. A recent Emergency
phone call to police dispatch in Cleveland, Ohio Shows a 911 call placed by a pedestrian in the
park stating that a man with a gun is in scaring people and I believe the gun is probably fake.
the caller pointed out twice that the gun was probably fake. The police dispatcher neglected to
mention that the gun was probably fake.

If miscommunications like this are happening every day, then how can we as the people
trust our system to come through when we need it the most. I think that the thing that sums up all
of this is on. George, Diana. "The Most Honest Artform Available." Reading Culture
Mycomplab Access Card. S.l.: Addison-Wesley, 2011. Print. This chapter talks about how to
relate to what is happening within the community through art, as well as how to express yourself
without being violent toward one-another. For example the photograph on (page 311) shows a

girl who is searching the officer, instead of the otherway around which is sometime unlawful and
can cause tension within the community.

Another example appears on George, Diana. "Signs From The Heart: California Chicano
Murals." Reading Culture Mycomplab Access Card. S.l.: Addison-Wesley, 2011. Print. This
talks about how Chicano murals within the community can show how the community has come
together from many generations of police brutality and community issues. Sometimes the murals
can reflect a community standing up to violence and attempting to put a stop to it. I believe that
with the violence and brutality that is being covered up, this is one of the few nonviolent way a
community can express themselves without being confronted by the police.

Overall our community faces daily forms of racism, sexism, discrimination and many
other form of violence. Some of these are not noticed until someone speaks up about them. Every
individual is entitled to their own opinion when observing the cultural and sexual diversities of
this community and country. I think the thing one must remember is that when making choices
based up a communal opinion, it may cause more problems within the community itself.

All and all our community and country are faced with racism, sexism and various forms
of discrimination on a daily basis. I believe that it is up to you as a community member to take a
stand for what is right within the community. Some of the legal things you could do are; put up
posters in your community that relay the message to put a stop to racism, sexism and other forms
of discrimination. I believe that know matter what there will always be a something in the

community that is drawing people farther and farther apart, which has caused many issues that
sometime relate to gangs and dangerous habits.

All and all there are good and bad things that occur within the community and within the
country, that can cause a community to separate or come together based upon what has
happened. In the end one must realize what is most important to oneself when making a choice
that may cause a community to act out in violence, such as not convicting a killer police officer.
Furthermore by giving the community what they want on a legal level could just cause a peaceful
protest, where there are no fires set to local businesses and communal gathering spaces. I believe
by giving the people what they want when it is extremely clear to federal government what is the
right verdict to take.

From riots in the streets to killer police, I believe that we as the people need to come
together and create a safer environment, A place where people can walk down the street without
having the fear that the African American behind them is going to rob them, shoot them and then
rape them. Without having the thought that the Muslim on the train is going to suicide bomb
everyone. I think that (Isaac Fiuza) makes a good point about stereotypes in his essay, The thing
that makes the best community, is diversity and the power to coincide with one another.
