George Meades students focused the Mind, Self, and Society theory on the
idea that oneself is not born but created by interaction with other people and social
groups. Social interaction shapes a person into who they are because without it they
would not be anything. This develops ones language, self thoughts, reality, and in all
honesty their identity and self esteem. Due to this idea of personal construction,
there is a need for ethical communication and interaction between people. This is an
act of compassion, and a responsibility for one another in our development because
we need each other to spar on and develop from the beginning to the end.
In my role as a diversity coordinator on IWU campus, and my upbringing
honor and respect are always at the forefront of my interactions and communication
with others. The words that I say and the connection that I make with people is
important to them, because it is also important to me. Examples such as selffulfilling prophecy, naming, and the generalized other are powerful effects that our
communication and community can have on others. I have the power to build up
others and develop them well, just like they have for me and I take that seriously. I
am very careful with my word choice, and I try to be positive and uplifting even in
times of correction. I want others to be as successful as possible, and I am going to
do all that I can to do so.
