At7:35p.m.thelightsallegedlywentout.Duringthefollowingminuteinwhichthelightsremained
off,aglasswasdropped.At7:36p.m.,whenthelightsreturned,CaptainCornballhadbeenstabbedinthe
backoftheneckwithasteakknife.Hisdeathwasofficiallypronouncedat8:00p.m.bypolice.
Priortothepicnic,bothNormaNannyandSamStubs(whoarealsofirstcousins)wereoften
seenconversing.Webelievethatduringthistime,theywereplottingthedeathofCaptainCornball,whose
realnamewasThomasSandstone.
ction.Duringtheexchangeoftheweapon,Normaaccidentallyslicedherfingerontheknifebefore
committingthecrime.Thisistheonlywaytoexplainhowshecutherfingerinthebriefminutethatpassedwhenthe
lightswereoff.Theglassthathaddroppeddidnotbreak,andcouldnothavebeensharpenoughtodrawblood.
Withthecompiledevidence,weareaccusingbothNormaNannyandSamStubs.Wecallforfirst
degreemurder,premeditatedmurder,andobstructionofevidenceonNormaNannyandaccessorytomurderand
assisted,premeditatedmurderonSamStubs.
RESEARCHEVIDENCE

BloodType
a.
Weidentifiedeachsuspectsbloodtypethroughputtingdifferentantigensintothesample.TypeABloodhas
Aantigens,TypeBBloodhasBantigens,andTypeOhasnoantigensifthesepairsarematchedup,aswedidin
theexperiment,theywillclot.Basedonthisinformation,wewereabletosaywhichsuspectsamplewaswhich
bloodtype.

ThiscontinuestosupportthatSamandNormabothplottedthecrimeeachofthemhavelefttracesoverthecrime

Chromatography

Therewasathreateningnotewritteninanunknownink.Wecomparedthreeknownpentypeswithapiece
ofpaperfromthecrimesceneusingchromatographypaper.Hydrogenbondsformedbetweentheinkandpaper
whentheendofthepaperwasplacedinalcoholthiscausedtheinktorisetowardsthetopofthepaper.We
comparedtheratioofthesolutefront,alcohollevel,tothesolventfront,inklevel.

DNASequence

WeidentifiedeachsuspectsDNAbyusingpicturesoftheirDNAsequenceandmatchingthemtothe
evidencefoundinthecrimescene.
4.
Fingerprint
a.
Throughthisexperiment,wefiguredoutwhichsuspectsfingerprintwasfoundinCrimeScene1.Tostart,
wetookaslidewiththeimprintofthefoundfingerprintanddusteditthoroughlywiththefluorescentpowderusing
buffingbrush.Toviewthefingerprint,wehadaUVlightshineontoit.Onceweweresurewehadaclearprint,we
usedfingerprintingtapetotransfertheprint.Itwasthentapedontotheevidencereport,wherewewereableto
comparetheacquiredprintwiththeprintsofallthesuspects.Afterstudyingtheprints,wewereabletoconclude
thattheprintfromCrimeScene1belongedtoSamStubs.
5.
DNAFingerprint

WewereabletoacquireDNAFingerprintsbyrunningeachsuspectsDNAsampleinagel.Weused1%
agarose,thesolute,and1xTAE,thesolvent,tomakethisgel.Afterrunningthegels,eachsuspecthadadifferent
patternofcolor.

picturesofeachsuspectandorganizedthembasedonsize.Usingthefinalpicture,wefoundanyabnormalitiesin
thepersonsgeneticsandcomparedthegeneticsequencetothetwosetsofsamplesfoundatthecrimescene.

matchedSamStubs.However,whilethelightswereout,anotherpersoncouldeasilytakeSamsdinnerknifeandusetheweapon
inordertoframesomeoneelse.Infact,thismoveseemsmorelikelybecausetheperpetratorwouldwanttoframeanother
person.
BothNormaNannyandSamStubshadextrememotiveformurder:
1)
SamStubswouldhaveharboredimmensehatredforCornball,whowasinvolvedinanaffairwithhis
motherandthemurderofhisfiancee,Peebles.
2)
NormaNannywouldhavesuspectedCornballfortherecentmurderofhercousin,Nadia,andhisaffairwith
heraunt.Moreimportantly,shewouldhavesympathizedwithherloveinterest,FredFleckstone,whowasthesonand
brotherofCornballsmurdervictims.
3)
SamStubsandNormaNannywerenotinarelationshipofanykind.Samwasstillheartbrokenover
Peeblesdeath,andNormahadstrongfeelingsforFredFleckstone.
TheonlylogicalreasonfortheirconstantsightingstogetheristheplottingofCornballsmurder.Theydidnotmeet
untilrecently,whichcoincideswiththerecentreleaseofCornballfromprison.
FamilyConnections:
Motives:
Nadia,Normasfirstcousin,waskidnappedandmurderedrecently.Shebelievesthatcrimewascommitted
byCaptainCornball,alsoknownasThomasSandstone,andisemotionallyupsetbecausehewasjustreleasedfromjail.
ThisangerfueledheractionstoavengehercousinsdeathandisaprobablereasonshemurderedCaptainCornball.
NormacouldalsobeangeredbecauseCaptainCornballhadanaffairwithheraunt.
Normaisemotionallyunstableduetothetriplexdisease.Thischromosomaldisorderleadstobehavioral
andmentalissuesthataffectheractions.Normaisalsoemotionallydistressedduetoovaryfailures,acommonsideeffect
oftriplexdisease.Thiscauseshormonalchangeswhichleadstoextrememoodswings,irritability,andcognitiveissues.
SamwouldwanttomurderCaptainCornballbecauseCaptainCornballhadanaffairwithhismotherwho
recentlydied.Herdeathcouldcauseemotionalturmoilthatcouldbeareasontohisviolentintentionsandactions.
SamsfiancewasrecentlymurderedbyThomasSandstone,whoisalsoCaptainCornball.AfterPeebles
death,SamhasbeenverydespondentandwantedrevengeonCaptainCornballespeciallyhegotreleasedfromjail.
SamandNormahavebeenseentalkinganddiscussingtogether.Thisisnotbecausetheyareinaserious
relationshipbecauseNormahasfeelingsforFredFleckstoneandSamisstillheartsickoverPeebles.Thereasonwhy
thesetwopeoplearecommunicatingistoplotthedeathofCaptainCornball.
OtherArguments:Theglassthatwasdroppedwasneverbroken,asprovedwiththepictureofthecrimescene,so
Normawouldnotbecapableofcuttingherfingerontheglass.Therewasalsonotraceofherbloodontheglass,onlyonthe
knife.
ThereweretwosamplesofbloodtypeandDNAfromthecrimescene.Thefirstsampleofblood,typeO,matched
SamStubs,Fred,Fleckstone,andCaptainCornball.Thesecondsample,typeA,matchedNormaNanny,GlenGlendora,and
TheresaThyme.TheDNApatternmatchedSamStubsandCaptainCornball.TheothersamplematchedNormaNanny.
SamtoldNormatocommitthemurderbecausehewasnotstrongenoughbecauseofhischromosomaldisorder.
