Information About
Resource
Limitations of Resource:
The resource can display an intensive reading for ELL students with
few visuals which it will make harder the reading. Different opinions
are models of clear and concise writing; the newspaper also contains
many different types of writing models: narrative, persuasive,
expository. Newspaper stories are also written for various reading
levels.
Students will work in groups to collect clippings from the newspaper to show how it performs its the four functions:
to inform, to advise, to interpret and persuade; and to entertain. Provide students with a variety of headlines, stories, photographs, cuttings and
other front-page components that you have clipped from your area newspaper. Direct students
to arrange the components in an attractive, easy-to-read front page.
Have students clip from their newspapers at least three examples of each of the four types of news international, national, state and local.
Have students find examples of feature stories in their newspapers. Class discusses the various styles of writing in the articles. Students will
work in the same groups to answer questions based on the article.

Strengths of Resource:
The movie present one the most painful parts in Americas Past. It
teaches a big lesson about African Americans in the US.
The representation of slavery and abolition in the movie is not only a
highly emotive and potentially divisive subject, it also provides a
means of accessing the past in a manner which is empowering and
rewarding.
The series describes important aspects of the black experience in the
U.S. and, for all Americans, helps in facing the legacies of slavery and
segregation.
Limitations of Resource:
It is a very long movie; it is divided into six sections. Some parents
might have some objection about their children viewing the movie.
There is some violence in this movie, but it is appropriate to its
message. The African women are shown in their traditional way of
dressing which does not include any covering of their breasts.
Methods for Adapting Each Resource Based on Differentiation of Language and Literacy Levels:
Vocabulary words with pictures. explain more in details of historical events during those years. Jigsaw activity to check students points of view
