Hosanky, David, Can tougher laws stop violent rituals? CQ Researcher 04 Feb 2013 Volume
23, issue 6 Web. 08 Feb 2013
In this article it addresses the issue of hazing and how laws can minimize the negative
connotation that comes with hazing rituals. The article shows examples from several stories
including hazing incidents at Northern Illinois University, U.S. Army, and Florida A&M University
that led to the demise of three people. This article explains ways to prevent hazing through
creating laws against it, and also sponsoring anti-hazing events to raise awareness. Other issues
also include how hazing can be beneficial, whether hazing can be acted upon voluntarily, and
the overall definition of hazing.
I feel this article source is very reliable as it provides many different views on Hazing. It
not only provides examples of Hazing, but also a background and the many different types of
hazing. It gives an overview of Hazing and how it can affect people. It gives more of a non-bias
voice by asking questions instead of forming its own opinion. The source uses a lot of
information and other sources to get better insight on the topic. The goal of this source is to

analyze the topic and discover the issue and the affects from hazing, and also how to prevent it
from happening.
This source was very helpful as far as information given. It helps shape my argument by
giving me multiple topics within the issue of Hazing to analyze. This source will help me in my
research project by providing a solid foundation of the basis of the issue of Hazing. It has
changed my view about the topic tremendously because it shows Hazing in all aspects, and
specifies the meaning of hazing into different categories.
Hansen, Brian, Can more be done to stop it? CQ Researcher 1 Jan 2004. Volume 14, issue 1.
Web. 9 Jan 2004
In this article it exams the effects of Hazing in schools. From high school to college
hazing is present. This article explains the many rituals and practices in certain sports teams,
and groups within organizations like fraternities and sororities throughout the schools. It also
highlights specific events that have led to many injured and sometimes fatal. This article also
discuss whether or not more organizations are doing enough to stop hazing or even raise
awareness. It also questions the theory of Hazing and it ritualistic principals. Does it help
establish cohesiveness, or help build character.
This article mainly focuses on hazing within school organizations. I feel this article is very
reliable because it explains where most hazing incidents happen, among peers. It explains the
acceptance and approval factor that Hazing provides after it is complete. The initiations,
ceremonies and rituals create an inside look on all the effects of Hazing in schools. This source
compares to other sources I used by way of displaying the aftermath of Hazing.

This source was very helpful to me as it provided an inside look on how Hazing is used in
schools among peers. It helps shape my argument by demonstrating specific examples of hazing
in school and also having awareness of this vital subject. I will use specific examples from this
source in my research project to explain the effects of this issue and why it should be abolished.
Mantel, Barbara, Have efforts to reduce alcohol abuse failed? CQ Researcher 29 Sept 2006.
Volume 16, Issue 28. Web. 6 Aug 2006
This article is about the effects of drinking and how it relates to hazing. Drinking games
and rituals have been related to hazing events occurred in most schools. This article explains
how students consume too much alcohol and attain a disorder called alcohol poisoning. This
article highlights the fact that the alcohol poisoning can be caused by hazing rituals and drinking
games. This source discusses how social media can be a positive impact on making students
drink more responsibly and not consuming too much alcohol, therefore partially eliminating
hazing that would involve alcohol.
This source gives information on a specific issue within Hazing. It gives insight on how
alcohol can be used in Hazing, and also how we can prevent alcohol from making an impact on
the social status. This sources information is reliable because it provides examples and answers
many questions the problem this issue would pose. The goal of this source is to give
information on how alcohol can be used in hazing and how it effects the youth.
Overall this source is very reliable as it has detailed information needed to support the
effects of Hazing and why it should be abolished. It shows specific examples of what alcohol can
do and also discusses concerns of how colleges are not making more restrictions and being

more responsible with alcohol. It has changed the way I think about a topic because it gave me
a better understanding of how many different things can be used during hazing and also how
aware are people of these hazing events.
Morris, Catherine, Diverse: Issues in Higher Education.Vol. 31 Issue 15 p18-19 2p.; Aug.
28,2014
This source identifies a specific story about a former student from Dartmouth, who talks
about his experiences of being hazed in his former fraternity. The student writes a book to not
only tell all what happened but to vouch for the dangers of hazing in a fraternity. In this book
he discussed some terrible events that led to psychological, physical, and mental harm. He
describes the events he endured as horror stories. He also talks about how the hazing rituals
were strictly enforced and supported by the university and also how there was a strict code fo
silence about the ceremonies and rituals.
This source provides a personal story from a former student who has experienced
hazing. This establishes a direct connection between hazing and a victim. This source compares
to other sources through the common theme of hazing. This source is also different because it
has more personal view of the subject and provides specific examples that are very detailed.
The goal of this source would be to access detailed information given by this student to show a
personal connection with hazing.
The source was very helpful as it provided a personal experience of hazing. This source
will be most helpful on my research project when I am providing examples for hazing. This

source has changed my way of thinking about this topic mainly by providing a truly detailed
personal view of how hazing can affect people short and long term.
Dockterman, Eliana, Fraternity Bans Initiations After Hazing Deaths. Time.com. Mar. 3, 2014
This article highlights a specific Fraternity (Sigma Alpha Epsilon). This specifc fraternity
has been notorious for its initiation process. It uses hazing as a way to bring in worthy
members. It has had at least 10 Sigma Alpha Epsilon members die because of Hazing. This
organization has had to ban all initiation processes due to a mother who sued the chapter for
25 million following the death of her son. Due to theses certain events SAE among other
chapters have decided to eliminate all pledging ceremonies. Now there is a bidding process that
will forego all hazing events.
This source samples a fraternity that was known for its hazing antics and got punished
for them. It shows how a fraternities bad choices can make them regret their decisions later.
The source is very useful as it provides an actual example of a once storied fraternity and how it
caught bad publicity and fell through the ranks. Compared to other sources this one identifies
one specific group and analyzes their faults in the issue of hazing.
This source was very helpful to me because it provided me with more detailed
information about fraternities and hazing rituals. It gave me a true understanding of the
backlash that comes with Hazing and how it can reflect not only the group involved, but the
people around it too. It helps my argument by providing another example to show that hazing
should be abolished from these organizations.
Flanagan, Caitlin, The Dark Power of Fraternities. Atlantic. Vol. 313 Issue 2, p72-91; Mar2014.

This article explains the power of fraternities, and how they hold a clear title over these
higher education centers. It also discusses the many lawsuits against fraternities which include
some from Hazing incidents. Topics discussed include the history of fraternities, deaths and
injuries that occur at frat parties, and liability claims that include sexual assault, and hazing.
This article takes a deeper look into fraternities and all the things that make up a
fraternity. The source is useful because it gives more information on why fraternities are under
such scrutiny and what really goes on behind closed doors. It gives a better perspective and
provides real facts on fraternities. The source is not bias or objective to the topic of hazing.
This source really helped me gather more information about fraternities and why they
do what they do. The source helps shape my argument by showing more examples and more
statistics on fraternities and how hazing is involved with crime. I think this source is a reliable
source for my research project because of the facts given. This source gives me a better
understanding of how fraternities are, what their goals are, and how they are involved with
hazing, and other crimes.
Jackson, Nate, Hazing in the NFL. New York, Vol, 46 Issue 36, p9-10 2p. Nov. 18 2013
This personal narrative takes a look inside a former Denver Broncos life, as he shares his
experiences in the NFL. He first describes the nature of a football layer in the NFL saying that
players are categorized and sanctioned to be savages and act like pain does not bother them.
The tough guy motto is what he describes. Going along with this, he addresses the Richie
Incognito situation that was analyzed as bullying and a hazing incident. He then discusses the

nature of the locker in the NFL and how hazing is a regular duty for Rookies. Most rookies
undergo specific task to do for veterans, as part of their rookie initiation.
This article brings in another alternative to the hazing rituals. It describes the NFL rite of
passage and how people misconstrued what is natural to something that is harmful. This brings
another dynamic to the topic of hazing because it involves adults, not just college students.
Hazing in sports leagues are much different mainly because they are usually playful gestures.
This source describes the rituals performed as more of a rite of passage rather than a hazing.
This source does have a bias view because of the personal experience given by the former NFL
player.
I feel this source will ultimately help me by giving me another dynamic for the topic of
hazing. It gives me a more specific outlet to work with. It focuses on more than one group of
people, more so adults now. This source will change the way I think about my topic because it
gives a personal view of a different dynamic of hazing and questions the non benefits of hazing
also. It raises the question of Is all hazing bad?.
USA TODAY, Bullying vs. team bonding; Nov. 11, 2013
This article specifies in the area of bullying. It focuses on the Richie Incognito and
teammate Jonathan Martin bullying incident. This specific incident can be related to verbal
abuse and verbal hazing. The problem with the incident is that the racial slurs that incognito
said to martin was put in perspective when the bullying incident was publicized.
This article proves that bullying can become a form of hazing. Whether or not it was
meant to be put in that perspective, it still provides a negative connotation. This not only

highlighted the Miami dolphins locker room but opened eyes on the NFL and the issue of
bullying, hazing, etc. The nature of the sport requires toughness but in the locker room
toughness can only go so far before it is seen as obscene or disrespectful. This source gave me
an inside look on the specific Hazing and verbal abuse incidents that can happen in the NFL.
This was a bias overview of the topic because it was a personal interview.
This source will provide me with a better understanding of Hazing outside of school. It
will help shape my argument by showing more than one issue with hazing in different areas
such as prosports. I will use this source in my research project to help provide more examples
of hazing and where it can form. This source has changed the way I think about my topic by
providing more than one way to experience hazing.
