Kilbourne, Jean. "Beauty...and the Beast of Advertising." Center for Media Literacy.
2002-2011 Center for Media Literacy. Web. 4 Dec. 2014.
In this article Jean exposes advertising and how it portrays women and has
established ideals in society today. She discusses how adolescents are vulnerable
and how the media uses that to their advantage directing most ads towards that age
group. Jean talks about how advertising has influenced sexual attitudes, created
artificiality and cornered women in a way of being a housewife, sex slave or
independent, but not with out the help of products.
I find this source very helpful in giving me an idea of how to structure my
essay; as well it has provided me with objectives to consider talking about. She
makes valid arguments and really makes the reader think about what they see
everyday and what affect it has had on them personally. It made me think about the
ways that advertising has hidden their true colors by advertising things such as
being independent and successful but only with the help of a product or sacrifice of
what really matters.
Jean Kilbourne is an author, speaker, and filmmaker who are internationally
recognized for her work, educating women about their image in advertising and
how media exploits the adolescent girls in particular. She is a motivational speaker

whose documentaries and lectures are seen across the world. Jean has also
introduced the idea of educating about media literacy as a way to begin to alleviate
and eventually rid problems she views as originating from mass media advertising
campaigns. This article is part of a campaign she did where she spoke around the
country, she has connections with psychologists and studies around the world, and
so I feel that this is a credible source.

"Body Image Of Women." RSS 20. 2014 Www.mirror-mirror.org. Web. 4 Dec.

2014. <http://www.mirror-mirror.org/body-image-of-women.htm>.
In this article the issue of mass media effecting body image is talked about. It
discusses, in detail, how and why the media do what they do, how it causes negative
body image in women and the effects of having a poor body image. It gives statistics
from sources such as the CDC etc. and gives facts about body image and eating
disorders.
I am talking about all these issues in my essay, so I can obtain great
information from this site. Its backs me on my opinion so I can feel confident in the
information I represent and contribute.
I feel that that is a credible source because this is on an eating disorders
website, made for educating on the disease as well they have sourced references
from which they have retrieved their information.

This article discusses the affect that social media as in the pictures we post
and the comments made on not only objectification but also self-objectification. It
explains how not only does society objectify the body but it has gotten to the point
where self-objectifying ourselves has become a socially accepted norm. It talks
about how we have gotten used to having to explain ourselves in words on dating
sites and even employer sites in ways that are detrimental, and needs to be
reversed.
This article will help me when I talk about objectification and trying to
explain the act it self, where is derives and how it thrives. It also will help me to
explain how to begin to overcome the problem.
I find this source credible because it was written by a doctor, on the
psychology website. It also gives additional references to go to, and discusses
studies done on the subject matter.

"ANAD." Eating Disorders Statistics. Web. 4 Dec. 2014. <http://www.anad.org/getinformation/about-eating-disorders/eating-disorders-statistics/>.

This cites lists facts on Eating disorders and organizes them in genres. It talks
about them in general and goes into subgenres, for example, athletes, students, men,

and women. It also lists facts about mortality rates and about where these disorders
come from. An example of that would be how the media, dieting and perceptions
affect or contribute to eating disorders and to what extent.
I can use the facts in my logos, ethos AND pathos portions of my essay. It will
give hard evidence of my argument and will also make the audience be able to relate
and feel in some way towards the topic.
This is a credible site because, it is a website for a national association of
anorexia nervosa and associated disorders, whom would have credible facts being
they have their own studies and sources of information.

Spears Brown, Ph.D., Christia. "The Way We Talk About Gender Can Make a Big
Difference." Psychology Today: Health, Help, Happiness Find a Therapist. Web. 4 Dec.
2014. <http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/beyond-pink-andblue/201403/the-way-we-talk-about-gender-can-make-big-difference>.
In this website the topic of gender stereotyping is viewed. It describes
studies taken that prove the fact that it does exist and that is does affect how the
male and female genders are valued and viewed. It talks about how because of the
existence of gender stereotyping we have sexism and acceptance of specific genders
doing only specific things.
I can use this in my essay when I talk about sexism in advertising. I can use
the studies data to improve my logos. I feel like this may open the viewers eyes and
make them think about more possibilities of change in the way we accept norms.

I find the site credible because it is on the psychology website and has
additional sites to refer to check the information.
