TheYouthSymphonyOrchestrasofEastCentralIndianaisinits59thyearofmakingandlearning
aboutmusic.AlongwiththehelpofDr.KarinHendricks,thisyeartheYSOECIhastheaidoftwodoctoral
students,aswellasnineundergraduatesinBallStateUniversitysMusicEducationprogram.Thisyears
graduateassistantisJavierMendoza,adoctoralstudentinconductingwithmanyyearsofexperience
workingwithyouthorchestras.WealsohavethehelpofIrinaMueller,doctoralinternandviolinperformance
major,whoisleadingstringsectionals.ThenineundergraduatesareinvolvedwithaBallStateUniversity
immersivelearningclass,wheretheygaincriticalprofessionalexperiencebyservingonadministrative
committees,teachingandmentoring,andplayingasmembersoftheorchestraandhelpyoungerstudents
withindividualfeedback.
Theimmersivelearningprogramismakingatremendousimpactonallparticipants.TwoBall
Statestudentsrecentlydescribedhowthisexperiencehaspreparedthemforprofessionalcareersinmusic
teaching:
Thisclasshasexposedmetotheamountofworkrequiredtoadministeratopnotchensemble.
Ifeellikewearehavinggreatopportunitiestopracticeprofessionalsituations.
Ihavebeenpresentedwithorganizational,social,musical,andeducationalopportunitiesthatno
otherclassIhavebeenenrolledinhasbeenabletoofferme.Thisclasscontinuestogivemepractical,
reallifeexperienceonwhatittakestorunanddirectaneducationalorganizationofthiscaliber.
Similarly,youthsymphonystudentsaredelightedtocometorehearsalsandlovetorequestnew
piecesthattheywouldliketolearn.Wehopetopurchaseacollectionofmusicinthespringtohelpmeet
thisinterest.
Thisyearweareespeciallypleasedtoofferyoungmusiciansseveralopportunitiesforcommunity
andinternationaloutreach.InadditiontoperformingwiththeEastCentralIndianaChamberOrchestraon
November15(seeinformationbelow),onNovember18wewillholdalive,onlinewebconferencewith
studentsandteachersinareputedElSistemayouthorchestraprograminGuatemala.
