Focus & Review

Lesson Objective

Teacher Input

Recall lesson from last week about the digraph Sh and how it be a
beginning or ending sound. Introduce another consonant digraph
Ch. Ask students if they have any idea what a consonant diagraph is.
Then explain that they are two letters, that come together to make one
sound. Introduce Ch, and invite students to brainstorm some words
that have Ch in them. Write them down on a flipchart. This way, their
prior kindergarten knowledge reflects.
The students will learn about consonant digraph Ch. Students will
learn the different sounds Ch can make and come up with words that
start, end and have Ch in the middle. Students should then be able to
blend Ch and read words that have Ch with fluency and accuracy.
Watch Brain Pop Jr. Video on Ch. It tells students the sounds Ch
makes, gives examples of words and shows how to blend with letters.

Guided Practice

After watching video, ask the students what sounds Ch can make by
saying words. Allow students to work with a partner for a few
minutes. Give each pair of students a copy of the story Chip the
Chimp. Give the students about ten minutes to read the book together
and highlight words with Ch. Monitor students while they work. After
time is up, discuss the words they have highlight.

Independent Practice

Ask students to take a piece of paper out and make lines on it to make
three columns. Have them to label one column Ch, one Column
Sh and one columns Kuh to represent the sounds that Ch can
make. Tape note cards around the classroom with words that have the
sounds that Ch can make. For Example, School makes the sound
Kuh, Machine makes the sound Sh and chimp makes the sound
Ch. Have the students independently walk around the room
sounding out words and writing them in the proper column
corresponding to the sound they make.

Closure

Assessment

On an empty page of the flipchart used in the beginning, make the

three columns. Ask students for some words that make the Ch, Sh
and Kuh sounds. Assist those students who wrote a word out in the
wrong column find where it should go by advising them to make the
three sounds Ch can make and use process of elimination to only leave
the word that makes sense.
Tell the students that now every time they come across a word that has
Ch consonant diagraph, they can use the three sounds to help them
figure out what the word is.
Ask students:
How do you blend words using Ch consonant digraph?
What sounds can Ch make?
What part of a word can Ch be in? Beginning, middle, end?
The independent practice shows whether or not students acquired skill
on not. Observation during guided and independent practice.

Literacy Centers
1. Digraph Sort: Students will practice sorting pictures that have digraphs Ch or Sh. They
will place the picture in the correct column. Then, they will complete a digraph sorting sheet by
pasting the Ch or Sh words in the correct column.
2. Magnet Letter Spelling: Students will use letter magnets to spell all 10 spelling words with
Ch. Each student will choose 3 words and write a sentence for each word.
3. Rhyme Time: Students will match Ch word pictures to other pictures that rhyme with those
words. They will complete a worksheet where they will paste pictures that rhyme with the Ch
words.
4. Consonant Digraphs-Pocket Chart Sort: Students will practice reading and sorting words
with both beginning and ending consonant digraphs Ch and Sh.
5. Guided Reading Small Group: Using leveled readers books students will work on skills of
phonemic awareness, decoding, comprehension, and vocabulary. The small groups that require
intervention will work on the struggling areas of foundational skills.
