Lesson Plan
Title of Lesson: Breaking down sane syllables!
Teacher Name: Ms. Nyesha Hicks
Grade: 3rd Grade
Academic Subject Area: Reading: Foundational Skills
Academic Subject Standard Code: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.3.3 Know and apply gradelevel phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
Anticipatory Set

I will began by reminding the students about

how we talked about learning new words by
breaking them down and sounding them out. I
will do a quick review of what syllables are
and how to break down words.

Objectives
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.3.3.C
Decode multisyllable words.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.3.3.D
Read grade-appropriate irregularly spelled
words.
Input

I will pass out the attached worksheets and

inform the students that we will complete an
activity that involves breaking down syllables.
I will also pass out scissors and glue to each
student. The students will have a sheet with
words on it. They will have to cut out each
single word. They will then have to cut up the
word by the syllables. For example: If the
word is CRAYON, they will cut out the word
by the syllables. That means they will have
two parts CRAY and ON. They will then glue
these parts onto the next worksheet that is

empty.
Guided Practice

After passing out the materials/activity and

explaining what they will be doing step by
step, I will complete a few words on the
worksheet with the help of the students to
make sure that they understand how to do the
activity. This will give me an opportunity to
assist the students that are not breaking the
words down correctly and to help the students
that are just confused.

Independent Practice

The students will work independently by

cutting up their words into the broken
syllables and putting them on the empty sheet.
When the students are done they will raise
their hands and I will go around and check
their work. If it is correct I will give them
permission to glue their syllables down.

Closure

The purpose of this activity is to give the

students more practice with breaking down
words. This will help them when they attempt
to learn words that they dont know later on.

Assessment

After the activity, I will write 10 words on the

white board. The students have to write each
word down and beside it write the same word
but broken into syllables. For example:
1. Basketball: bas-ket-ball
2. Polish: po-lish
I will take these up as they leave for recess.

Dear parents,
My name is Ms. Nyesha Hicks and I would like to welcome you and your child to
a new school year. I am extremely excited to have your child in my classroom this
year. I would like to inform you of what our class will be working on during the
next week. The students have been practicing breaking down and sounding out
words in order to figure out what the word is. By following the Common Core
objectives 3.3.C (decoding multisyllable words) and 3.3.D (read grade appropriate
irregularly spelled words) your child will be learning how to break down the
syllables in words by doing an activity. The literacy centers that the students
participate in daily will also assist them in learning how to break down and learn
words.
