Reminder** I expect your answers to be appropriate and respectful. This assignment is not an
outlet for you to express your frustrations, nor am I asking if you picked a side of these issues. I

Any inappropriate answers or comments will result in a zero for this assignment.

2. Journal Entry
As a journal entry, pretend you are Zora Neale Hurston living today. From her
perspective, write a short response regarding the events of Ferguson and the comments of
Raven Symone. As Hurston, focus on the following concepts or questions:

Where are you? What are you doing? Are you in Ferguson or somewhere else?
How do the riots in Ferguson make you feel?
Are you watching the protests or joining in the protests?
Do you agree with the comments made by Raven Symone? What would you tell
Raven Symone if you met her?

What do you think will happen next? What do you think should happen next?

This journal entry should be creative, organized, and well structured. Keep in mind, this
is not necessarily what you would do or how you would handle the situation, but how you
think Zora would handle the situation. Keep comments and thoughts appropriate and
respectful. This entry should have a title, date, be typed, double spaced, twelve point
Times New Roman. Aim for around 300-400 words. Bring into class, in hardcopy to turn
in on Thursday. Most importantly, have fun!

3. Presentation
Choose any event in history where a group of individuals has been oppressed based on
their race. With your selection, give a presentation on the individuals and/or the events
that took place as a result of their race and identity in society. There are two ways the
information may be presented to the class. Choose between a presentation which reports
the findings of your research or a mock trial in which you act out a trial based on your
person and/or event. This will be worth 100pts.
Report Presentation
In a group of 3 to 4, present to your fellow classmates a 10-15 minute report of your
chosen topic.
Include in your presentation:

Who is being oppressed?

When is this taking place? City? State? Year?

What events are taking place?

What are the reactions and thoughts of those being oppressed?

What are the reactions and thoughts of those doing the oppressing?

This should be done using multi-media or a PowerPoint. Each student must speak for the
same amount of time and contribute to the process of creating this presentation. Along
with presenting in front of the class, EACH GROUP MEMBER will turn in the
following:

A 1-page report specifying what that member will be presenting on, whether that
be the Who? Where? What? Or the reactions of the oppressed/oppressing.

An annotated bibliography with at least 5 sources that the member used during the
research of his/her topic.

A 1-page reflection on how the group member felt he/she did on the presentation.
How the group did overall? And what grade the group expects on the
presentation?

These assignments should be typed, double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12 point font.
Each group member will turn in their own work on the date that they are scheduled to
present.
Mock Trial
In a group of 3 to 4, present to your fellow classmates in 10-15 minutes your findings of
your chosen topic through a mock trial. Include in your presentation:

Who is on trial?

Why they are on trial?

Where and when is this trial taking place?

Has the accused pleaded guilty or non-guilty?

What are the reactions of the accused and his/her family?

What are the reactions of the accuser and his/her family?

What attitude does the public have about the trial?

Some of the information can be presented by a narrator at the start/end of the presentation
if it seems to make the presentation flow better, but try to incorporate as much as possible
during the mock trial through the characters.
Each group member should speak for approximately the same amount of time and
contribute to the process of creating the mock trial. Along with the presentation, EACH
GROUP MEMBER will turn in the following:

A 1-page report specifying what that member will be presenting on, whether that
be the character that he/she will he playing or what research he/she worked on?

An annotated bibliography with at least 5 sources that the member used during the
research of his/her topic.

A 1-page reflection on how the group member felt he/she did on the presentation.
How the group did overall? And what grade the group expects on the
presentation?

These assignments should be typed, double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12 point font.
Each group member will turn in their own work on the date that they are scheduled to
present.
