Unit Summary
Electricity is used all around us everyday, but often people do not consider where it comes
from and how it works. How does your television light up and make sound? What is happening
inside your charger cord when you plug in your cell phone? What happens inside a battery that
results in the formation of electricity? Throughout this unit, we will consider these electricity
questions and begin to understand the scientific principles behind them. To do so, we will explore
how we obtain and use electricity, how electrical energy is transformed, stored and transmitted,
and we will also look into how electrical energy is measured in certain units. Along with this, we
will experiment with setting up and understanding electrical circuits. We will also look into the
topic of renewable energy and environmental concerns when it comes to electricity.
Rationale
When it came to planning the Electrical Principles and Technologies unit for Grade 9
Science, as set out by the Alberta Program of Studies, I used both the Science Focus 9 textbook as
well as the Science in Action 9 textbook as resources. However, I used the Science Focus 9
textbook primarily as that is the book the students have and I want to make sure we are moving
through the unit with one another in sync. I also used NSRCs Electric Circuits activity book to
inspire some of my hands-on activities.
Electricity is a topic that can be somewhat abstract for students so I tried my best to fit in
as many hands-on activities as possible (setting up circuits and batteries etc.) so that they could get
a better visualization and understanding of the more conceptual topics. I also used three
labs/hands-on activities as summative assessments as to create more focus on engagement in the
unit rather than just quizzes and tests. I did however incorporate two quizzes as summative
assessments as I felt those would be the best way to assess how well the students can work with
important electrical energy formulas and calculations. At the end of the unit, I also included a
final unit exam, however it is not weighted heavily, so that again, the focus of this unit is hands-on
engagement. The unit test was incorporated so that I could see the students final understandings
of the outcomes in the unit. I also included an electrical energy research project focused on
inquiry into different energy sources. I think this will help prepare the students for future research
skills they will need in high school.
I continued on with the weekly science tutorials already set in place by my TA as I think it
is important to often keep with routine as well as review material students need more help on. I
hope to do an information-and-interest survey with my students on my first day and incorporate
some of their own interests that can be related to electricity into the lessons as well. I also hope the
information I collect from them in the survey will help me make sure all of their individual needs
are addressed and met as I teach them this unit.
Overall, I hope this unit is engaging, interactive, and elicits further science inquiry by my
students.
