Introduction (3 minutes)
Have students sit at their desks and tell them were going to
learn about shapes.
Ask: Who knows the difference between 2D and 3D
shapes?
Students stay seated at their desks and raise their hands to
answer questions.

Open the smart board activity to the first page and say: Im
going to have you come up one by one and match the 2D
shape on the left to the one on the right, and say its name.

Students come up one by one and match the six 2D


shapes (square, oval, rectangle, circle, triangle,
rhombus) to their matching shapes on the right. They
say the name of the shape before they drag it.
Turn to the next slide, and say: These are some
common 3D shapes. Weve got the cuboid, the cube,
the sphere, the pyramid, the cone, and the cylinder.
Do you see how 3D shapes are made out of 2D
shapes? Have the students come up one by one, to
match the 3D shapes on the left side of the screen to
the 2D ones on the right side of the screen. Ex. Cube
to square, cuboid to rectangle.
Ask the students what the difference is between 2D
and 3D shapes (2D shapes are flat). Turn to the next
slide, and have the students come up one by one to
drag the various 2D and 3D shapes to either the 2D
slot or the 3D slot.

Assessment: Observe if the students know the names of the


shapes
Differentiation: Allow students to help each other out if
someone doesnt know the name.

Finding 2D and 3D shapes in the room around us


Say: 2D and 3D shapes are in the world all around us. Lets
find some in this room. Ill start. I see a. Have all the
students share a shape that they can see from their desks, in
the room around them.

Assessment: Observe if the students can correctly identify


and name shapes in the classroom
Differentiation: Give tips to students who may need it
Drawing cartoon animals with shapes
Since shapes are all around us, knowing the basic shapes
can help us draw. Were going to draw cartoon animals using
the 2D shapes we talked about. Hold up a template and say:
See how there are steps to building the animal? You want to
start with the first step and follow all the steps.
Draw one of the animals on the whiteboard, following the
steps, so that the students can see how its done.
Hand out one paper for every student. Tell them to draw the
animal first and then color it. If they finish one animal, they

can come up to the back table and get more paper to make a
second animal.
Have extra templates of cartoon animals for the students
who may finish drawing all 3 of their animals before the
others are done.

Consolidation of
Learning:

Closure (7 minutes)
Have students come to the carpet with their finished animal
drawings and present them one by one to the class, saying
which shapes they used.
