5 sound words with consonant blends
Consonant blends are when 2 or 3 consonants are side by side, and each consonant sound is heard.
They can be found in the front or the back of words. This weeks words contain 5 sounds with
consonant blends.
***Marking the consonants with a line under each one, helps the students be more aware of the 2/3
consonants. This is especially helpful when writing these types of words. Very often, when words with
consonant blends are written, the second consonant is left out. Therefore, marking the consonants is a
strategy that helps the students with not only reading these words, but also writing them as well.
Examples:
Word: scrap (the 3 letter consonant blend is in the front of the word)
Marking the word: s c r a p
Word: struck (the 3 letter consonant blend is in the front of the word with a digraph in the back of
the word)
Marking the word: s t r u ck (the digraph gets a line under both letters since the 2 letters make 1
sound.
Word: stress (the consonant blend is in the front of the word with a bonus letter s in the back of the
word)
Marking the word: s t r e ss (the bonus letter s gets a star on top)
