The classroom community is one of the most crucial elements in the education
process for various reasons. Many factors can play into whether a student may be
successful or not in a classroom. For instance, a student may be able to flourish in a
classroom where he or she is familiar with the people in the classroom environment. I will
be the first to tell you, that environment does not work for me. In high school I came from a
smaller town where everyone knew everyone, and every word never missed everybody
elses ears. It was just another social event that everyone dreaded daily. It never inspired
me to want to learn on an everyday basis. I had to make my own methods for learning,
which helped me skim through the rest of high school. For me to be successful in an
educational environment it almost has to be a competition; not knowing faces, speculating
the smartest and sectioning the not so smart, and thriving to be better than my peers.
Competition is one of the most crucial elements in life because it makes you strive to be
better than your mind thinks you can be. In high school we used to have little competitions
in each class, mostly history courses, but none-the-less competitions in which it was you
versus another student. These always resonated with me because I never wanted to be
made a fool in front of the whole class. Staying up long nights before these competitions
digesting the material was the least of my worries, as long as I was able to edge the other
student. In conclusion, competition in the educational environment is not only effective but
also required to meet the expectations that we have set for ourselves and my goal is to be
able to engage in competition on the collegiate level.
