Lesson Title: Figures at Play

Unit: Community
Grade: 2
Lesson Duration: 7-45 minute classes
Lesson Objectives:

Students will become familiar with artwork inspired by community.


Students will become familiar with the art of Keith Haring.
Students will draw figures from direct observation and pose for other students.
Students will use action lines to show movement in a drawing.
Students will create art work with three-dimensional elements by cutting and pasting.
Students will use craftsmanship to create art with three-dimensional elements.

SOLs:

Anticipatory Set:
To understand how to draw a figure in motion students will dance to a piece of music. When the music
stops they freeze. The teacher then points out the positions of the students and how everyone has bent
knees and elbows. Students will now pair up and draw a partner in an action pose of their choice in their
sketchbooks.
Lesson Sequence:
1. Presentation on community is given.
2. Class discussion about what we do in our community.

3. Students will dance to a song and when the music stops they will notice the different positions
and how everyone has bent knees and elbows.
4. Students will pair up to draw each other in an action pose in their sketch books. They will draw
stick figure to focus on action poses.
5. Students will then be given a large sheet of black paper.
6. Teacher will demonstrate how to transfer drawing onto larger sheet. Students will draw their
figure on the paper.
7. They will then trace the figure to create a silhouette.
8. They will now draw in action lines and trace them in order to be cut out.
9. Now students will cut out figure and action lines to glue onto colored sheet.
10. Students will trace around figure and action lines with gel markers.
11. Students will cut out around lines and glue to another black sheet.
12. Students will reflect on their work by writing in their sketchbook. They will write about the
process and the action they are doing. They write about how they play in their community.
13. These ideas will be used to write an artist statement.
Closure:
Students will reflect on their art work. They will write in their sketchbook about the process and the
action they chose. They will write about how they play in their community. These ideas will be used to
write and artist statement.
