High School: Art I: Introduction to Art 1 and 2 SOLs

NAI.2: Identify and use steps in creative artmaking processes.

NAI.4: Develop an understanding of craftsmanship and quality to evaluate artwork.
NAI.8: Select and apply elements of art and principles of design to communicate meaning in works of art.
Materials Needed: 2B Pencil, Gridded Photo Reference, 10.5in X 15 in Paper,
kneaded eraser, ruler.

Vocabulary- Ratio, Proportions, Value, Shading

Essential Questions: Is gridding a successful way of drawing self-portraits?

Learning Objective Students will set up their paper by placing a grid on it that matches the
photo reference.

Anticipatory Set (Hook) Students will have already gridded their photo reference. Students will take what they have learned from that process and do the same to their paper. The
only difference is that this time their squares will appear to be 3 times bigger as a whole.

Procedures:

Students will take gridded photo and multiply the vertical size and horizontal size by 3.

Students will mark for every 1.5 inches around the photo.

Students will take those marks and create vertical and horizontal lines that create the grid.

Modeling- What examples will be provided for the student? Students will follow teacher with demonstration at first.

Guided Practice- Teacher will walk around and support the students as needed.

Check for Understanding- Students should be able to take what they learned from the previous lesson and apply it to the bigger sheet of paper. The teacher is looking for correct
proportions and straight/clean light lines.

Independent Practice- What will students do to independently practice the concept or skill? After the teacher is finished with the demonstration, the students will finish it on their
own.

Closure- How will the lesson be summarized? Students will be carrying on to draw their self-portrait.

Evaluation/Assessment- How will you measure the students success? The student will be evaluated on their proportions, ratios, and craftsmanship.

Suggestions for Differentiation-How will you scaffold the lesson up or down to support
student learning throughout instruction? Additional assistance will be given to those in need
of support student learning.
